  HPL: Occlumency
Occlumency is the art of magically defending the mind against external penetration, sealing it against magical intrusion and influence - the defensive counter to Legilimency.
Occlumency is a necessary prerequisite to defeat a Legilimens' lie-detector abilities without suspicious behaviour such as avoiding face-to-face contact and eye contact.
Occlumency has not often been studied at Hogwarts in the years prior to the second war against Voldemort, particularly not below N.E.W.T. level.

  ***OCCLUMENCY*** - occlumency class
Occlumency is, a branch of magic that concerns itself with closing one's mind against external penetration, with the intent of preventing others from reading one's thoughts or emotions.
The companion art to Occlumency is that of legilimency, the ability to read another person“s mind.
Both Legilimency and Occlumency are highly complex activities, owing to the complexity of the human mind.

Veritaserum Forums > Harry Right About Snape's Occlumency Lessons?
Jul 19 2005, 11:13 AM In OotP, Harry and Ron discuss that after the Occlumency lessons harry's scar hurts worse, and that either Harry or Ron (can't remember who) thinks that maybe Snape isn't really helping Harry close his mind, that maybe he is opening his mind to make it easier for Voldemort to penetrate.
If he did, it was during the private occlumency lessons, but only for educational purposes.
I think hovever, that he carried out the task of teaching Harry occlumency very involuntarinly (imagine, teching to protect himself the son of one of your greatest foes, Snape does not forgive easiily, if any at all) and used the pensieve incident to quit it.

It’s possible that the Occlumency lesson gambit may have been Plan B. Because the fact remains that Albus — or somebody — had called off the Order’s guards by the time Harry was goaded into making his raid on the DoM.
Snape’s behavior throughout the whole Occlumency fiasco was as fishy as a dockside quay.
Now, Snape’s Occlumency shield may have had to be lowered somewhat in order for him to attack Harry’s mind, that may be why Dumbledore wasn’t going to get involved in the lessons himself.

Seems to me Harry is going to have master Occlumency FIRST before he can spend any significant amount of time with Dumbledore (although the scar-link seemed somewhat severed by the end of OotP, but it’s hard to tell.
It does make sense to use it with Harry’s Occlumency training because Voldemort will not be concerning himself with the ethical dilemmas of mind-reading (and in this sense, it sort of validates Snapes teaching methods).
