In 1908 Annie Besant and C.W. Leadbeater published the first edition of their book Occult Chemistry, which recorded their investigations, utilizing specialized clairvoyant faculties capable of high powers of magnification, into the fundamental structure of matter.
The earliest investigations had first been published in the magazine Lucifer in 1895, and the first edition of the book was a summation of the work to 1908.
The book mainly deals with the structures of the elements, each atom being described and diagramed.

But as the contents of the book were originally arranged the reader was ill-prepared to appreciate the importance of the later research for want of introductory matter explaining how it began, and how the early research led up to the later investigation.
Occult research ascertained the actual number in some cases by direct observation and then discovered the law governing the numbers in all cases, and the relation of these numbers to atomic weights.
It has not yet reached the finer results of the occult research—the structure of the hydrogen atom with its eighteen etheric atoms and the way in which the atomic weights of all elements are explained by the number of etheric atoms entering into their constitution.

Thus the Occult Chemists might be excused for conceiving a random set of atomic pictures and associating them with elements known to chemistry on the basis of their effective atomic weights (number of anu / 18).
Besant wrote the beginning of Occult Chemistry in the first person, but she devoted little of her time to this activity and might be reluctant to share the blame with her collaborators.
In their attempt to force much of modern physics and chemistry into the procrustean bed of these ancient sutras, 20th century commentators, some of who were not as skilled in classical Sanskrit as they were eager to establish links to conventional science, also equate "parmanu" with subatomic particles.

During the course of the many long years that I have been connected with Occult Chemistry as recorder, as I studied each new atom as it was mapped out, I have been profoundly impressed by two ideas: one, ingenuity, and the second, beauty.
"Occult Chemistry," with its geometrical basic structures, is the source of all substances, and of all organisms built of those substances.
In the first edition of Occult Chemistry the two linear triplets are shown as being one in each triangle.

Occult theories show these scientists where to look, so to speak, and when scientists look there with their instruments, measurable effects are indeed observed.
Phillips' analysis of Occult Chemistry is highly complex and technical, and is given in the mathematical terms of modern physics (group theory to be precise).
As a matter of fact, Occult Chemistry as interpreted from Dr. Phillips' point of view is probably the most important scientific event to have ever occurred in the history of modern science; the actual scientific vindication of the existence of psychic abilities and therefore, of the occult world-view.

None will truly profit by the book who merely reads it through; a sentence should be taken as a thought to 'sleep on,' or as a note to which the day's work should be attuned, and, deeply meditated upon, should lead to the riches hidden beneath its words.

The reason this book is relevant is because Besant and Leadbeater use the little known psychic ability anima (called also "magnifying clairvoyance" or "micro- psi) which I discussed under the section of the notes titled "Surreal Spaces".
My favorite aspect of this book is that it is the only academic type book about altered states of consciousness I have ever read that suggests that the theories of Besant and Leadbeater may be the most suitable theories for explaining altered states of consciousness.
This book is especially useful for understanding the differences and the overlap between waking and dreaming.

Modern Theosophy: Light of the Sanctuary, extracts from Geoffrey Hodson's Occult Diary
It is, however, not occult but physical science that will have to adjust its conclusions which, whilst explaining some phenomena, leave others unexplained.
Occult physics elucidates them all, but knowledge of it must be slowly built up, and you are at work upon that process.
The testaments should appear in every book of Geoffrey's where clairvoyance has been the source of the knowledge which the book conveys.

Some day we may perhaps be presented with a volume on Occult Physics as important in its way as the present dissertation on Occult Chemistry.
The group is made up, not of single chemical elements, as in all other cases, but of sub-groups, each containing three elements, and the relations within each sub-group are very close; moreover the weights only differ by two atoms per bar, making a weight difference of twenty-eight in the whole.

Modern Theosophy: Concerning the "Occult Chemistry" Researches
From different sides the question has been raised what is the exact value of the Occult Chemistry researches with regard to pure science.
They have to do with the power to recognise, and to deal with, the difference between the astral bodies of dead and living people (when the latter are out of the body) and with the operation of 'magic' of all sorts.
It should be understood that the occult observer not only grows constantly more familiar, by experience, with the wielding of these powers and their varieties, but also that he is all the while making steady progress and adds new knowledge and powers to earlier conquests.

In 1970 she took part in a series of what the authors call successful experiments with a psi-teaching machine.
Russell Targ's first book, Mind Reach, coauthored by Puthoff, is about their tests of remote viewing when they worked for SRI International (then called the Stanford Research Institute).
Targ's second book, Mind Race, was written, as I said earlier, with psychic Keith Harary.
