Oceana County is believed to be named after a 14th century novel written by James Harrington.
A treaty that ceded the Grand Rapids territories, near Ionia, in exchange for the Oceana townships of Crystal and Eldbridge allowed many Native Americans to settle in the county.
In 1857 Native Americans from Grand Haven came to Oceana County, where they made maple syrup and maple sugar.

The name monuments were part of the Oceana County Honor Roll which was proudly displayed on two pilasters on court house lawn in Hart, housed in show glass for year round viewing.
Also on display with the names are original issues of the Oceana News Letter (a paper sent monthly to service people from Oceana to insure that each could receive mail from home once a month).
Marge Peterson, of the Oceana County Historical & Genealogical Society, believes the honor rolls were removed from the lawn of the court house prior to the construction of the new building.
