 1984 by George Orwell - TeacherVision.com
Like the citizens of Oceania, many postmodern writers have become mere recorders of a hopeless world rather than creators of a new one.
In the meantime, we should remember that the mindless citizens of Oceania are given neither the opportunity nor the encouragement to think or read.
If the themes of 1984 are studied in less complex literature, especially works dealing with actual historical events or fictional situations familiar to teenagers, students will be able to relate the happenings of 1984 to their own lives and their own futures.

By the end of the 1950's the term was frequently employed in the French media to refer to the underdeveloped countries of Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Latin America.
The underdevelopment of the third world is marked by a number of common traits; distorted and highly dependent economies devoted to producing primary products for the developed world and to provide markets for their finished goods; traditional, rural social structures; high population growth; and widespread poverty.
This combination of conditions in Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America is linked to the absorption of the third world into the international capitalist economy, by way of conquest or indirect domination.

Theroux's bittersweet and even dyspeptic travelogue about the faded glories of Oceania and it's current sad state (if one credits everything he says) isn't going to entertain so much as depress you, but I found it fascinating nevertheless.

The long-awaited follow-up to 1999’s stellar self-titled album sees Oceania - vocalist Hinewehi Mohi, Killing Joke alumnus Jaz Coleman, and an assortment of other players - staying on course, mixing native Maori instrumentation and poetry with modern musical styles.
And if the fact that I can’t seem to stop listening to it is any reliable indicator, this second album is even more compelling than the first.
Oceania II features wistful, emotional numbers such as Hawaiki, Niniwa and Kurupana, and hypnotically ethereal club tunes such as Rongo and Tauararai (the latter two of which are possibly my two favorite songs on the whole album).

Theroux compares the vast Pacific to the Universe: each island like a distant star, each archipelago like a galaxy.
His travels begin in what he calls “Meganesia”: the great islands of New Zealand, where he walks the mountain trails of the Fiordland wilderness; and Australia, where he hikes the red ranges around Alice Springs (“Oceania after someone has pulled the plug”) and camps among crocodiles and wild pigs on an Aboriginal reserve.
Alone in his kayak, paddling to seldom visited shores, he glides through time and space, discovering a world of islands, their remarkable people, and in turn, happiness.
