«Vityaz»`S epoch in oceanology, VII International Congress
A new epoch in Oceanology, as a matter of fact, its formation, is connected with her name.
The Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded to perform another global task – to study the World Ocean as a whole.
The idea to conduct the complex research, which used to be a new one in Oceanology and that is why a number of scientists did not share it, proved to be extremely effective.

In 1946, he became the Deputy-director (responsible for expeditions) of the newly founded Institute of Oceanology of the USSR AS (nowadays P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the RAS).
A Division of the Institute of Oceanology was created at Gellendzhik (the Black Sea), which performed numerous geological and diving activities at the Black and Caspian Seas.
In 1947, Ushakov was a Vice Chief of the expedition of the Academy of Sciences on board the R/V Aleksandr Griboedov, which went from Liepaya (Libava) to Rio de Janeiro and performed numerous oceanographic observations.

Institute Of Oceanology - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Its scope of activities embraces: investigations on marine physics, chemistry, hydrology, meteorology and climatology, sea bottom geomorphology, hydrodynamics, lithodynamics, geomorphology of the coastal zone and creation of scientifically grounded norms for design, construction and exploitation of marine hydrotechnical and port structures with the aim to use effectively the Black Sea resources.
The research units constantly increased from 5 to 10 (during 1989 - 1997) and then were reduced to 6 which embraced almost all scientific aspects of the oceanology: marine physics, chemistry, geology and biology, coastal zone dynamics and oceanotechniques.
Their activities grow wider after 1991 when the subjects Oceanology and Marine Ecology were included in the curriculums of the Navy School N. Vaptsarov.

The beginning of a new century and a new millennium, as well as a centenary of ICES are the good reasons to sum up advances in oceanology -one of the youngest among natural sciences.
Such a problem exists particularly in fisheries oceanology studying an influence of environmental parameters on fish stocks, which are depleting everywhere around the world.
Intensive development of the Russian (Soviet) fisheries oceanology took place during last 40 years with a peak at about mid-80-ies, when up to 200 expeditions were carried out ANNUALLY to investigate commercial fish resources and factors influencing on its variability.
