Texas County was formed at Oklahoma statehood (16 November 1907) from the central one-third of "Old Beaver County" also known as "No Man's Land".
As of 2000, the population of Texas County is 20,107.
In the county, the population is spread out with 28.80% under the age of 18, 12.70% from 18 to 24, 29.10% from 25 to 44, 19.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.20% who are 65 years of age or older.

The county is named for William Beck Ochiltree, who was Attorney General for the Republic of Texas.
In the county, the population is spread out with 30.60% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older.

In 1876 the Texas legislature established Ochiltree County from lands formerly assigned to the Bexar District.
The population of the county as a whole grew to 1,602 by 1910 and to 2,331 by 1920.
Ochiltree, fifteen miles south of the railroad, found itself at a distinct disadvantage when a new town, Perryton, was laid out on the railroad in 1919; Perryton was immediately made the county seat.

Ochiltree, on State Highway 70 nine miles south of Perryton in central Ochiltree County, was established in 1885 and named for a Texas politician and Confederate officer, William B. Ochiltree.
Population growth was sporadic, but by 1915 Ochiltree had a population of 500, a bank, a school, and two or three churches.
The same year, the town of Perryton was established on the railroad eight miles north of Ochiltree and was elected the new county seat.
