Ockeghem was probably born in the current Belgium, in what was then the Duchy of Burgundy -- estimates for the year of his birth vary from 1400 to c.1430, but written sources from the period indicate that he was a very old man by the time of his death in 1497.
Ockeghem's surviving musical output is relatively small, comprising a mere handful of motets, several masses, and a couple of dozen secular chansons.

Johannes Ockeghem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ockeghem is often considered the most important composer between Dufay and Josquin des Prez, and was one of the most famous composers in Europe in the latter half of the 15th century.
Recent research has shown that Ockeghem was born in the town of Saint-Ghislain; many older biographies state that he was either born in the town of his name or in the neighboring town of Dendermonde in East Flanders (now part of modern Belgium), part of the Duchy of Burgundy.
Thirteen of Ockeghem's masses are preserved in a late Fifteenth century Flemish manuscript known as the Chigi codex.

Ockeghem was born in the village of St. Ghislain (near Mons, Belgium) in the diocese of Cambrai, but his date of birth is unknown.
The first appearance of Johannes Ockeghem in the surviving records is the year (1443-1444) that he spent as a vicaire-chanteur (an adult singer in the cathedral choir) at Notre Dame in Antwerp.
Ockeghem's output was comparatively modest in size: ten complete Masses, some partial Masses and single movements, and also the earliest extant polyphonic Requiem, a handful of motets and 22 chansons.

Although Ockeghem composed relatively few works over the course of his lifetime - 10 masses, a number of individual mass movements, a handful of motets and 22 chansons - he had a considerable reputation even in his own day for the beauty of his music.
Ockeghem's Requiem, which is the earliest extant polyphonic work in the genre, is an unusual mixture of styles, with the Offertorium being the most sophisticated.
Highly challenging for even the most experienced of singers, it showcases not only Ockeghem's extraordinary inventiveness - his exploration of the lower registers, his use of unusual harmonies and melodic expressiveness - but also his ability as a singer, for the elaborate bass part was likely to have been written for himself to perform.

The death of the Franco-Flemish musician Johannes Ockeghem, one of the great composers of the 15th century, on 6th February 1497 brought a stream of poems and laments in his honour.
Ockeghem's pupils, among whom apparently all the great composers of the period belong, Josquin, de la Rue, Brumel and Compére, were invited to compose laments for him and met this request, Josquin even with his absolute masterpiece.
In spite of that here he stands among his singers, with glasses on his nose, the great, thin and consistently unerring master, reminding the observer that he was in his time almost as well known for his glorious, deep bass voice as for his unique language as a composer.

The Requiem of Ockeghem is the earliest surviving polyphonic setting of the Mass for the Dead, possibly composed for the funeral of Charles VII in 1561.
Ockeghem did not provide settings for the Sanctus or Communion; in this recording, settings of these two movements are added by a later composer working in a similar style.
Ockeghem uses the older texts from Psalms 23 and 42 for the chants between the readings; these are rarely heard since they were replaced by the more familiar Gradual and Tract after the Council of Trent.

 Ockeghem
Ockeghem's Requiem is the earliest extant polyphonic Requiem (unless Dufay's lost setting is discovered), and in it we encounter a wide diversity of techniques and vocal scorings that range from duets for high voice in strict imitation to the full, rich style that makes its first resplendent appearance at 'Req gloriae'.
The whole shape of the work is suggestive of a gradual descent from the initial predominance of generally high ranges to the closing repose of lower pitches provided by divided basses.
We have included the four further sections (that Ockeghem didn't not set) sung to plainchant - not to propose an 'authentic' ceremony, but to complete the musical logic by fully unwinding the thread of chant that begins the Introitus and continues, though often greatly embellished, throughout the polyphony as cantua firmus.

If we are to establish Busnois's birth date as c.1430, then Ockeghem would have been 20 years older then he and a likely candidate for his teacher, as Martin Picker suggests in his Groves article on Busnois.
On the other hand, of all the disciplines to which we might apply a deterministic approach, the theory and analysis of music has necessarily become more complex (and thereby it could be said that our methods are improving), and presumably we are able to discern more closely the structure and organization of composition.
He may not have had as much depth as Ockeghem, nor Busnois's subtlety and taste for intricate polyphony, but the clarity of his writing is remarkable.
