Topic: Ocotepec

  The Chiapas Project
The first mission to Ocotepec involved the 4 members of the Brody/Liegner family, and Sister Ernestina Vieyra of Mexico City.
The Superior of the Salesian Sisters in Mexico had determined that the volunteer efforts of the Brody/Liegner’s were most needed by the indigenous Zoque people of Ocotepec and the surrounding 51 pueblos.
It was at this time that David made the biggest mistake of the trip; he rented a Nissan car for the week.

A native of Ocotepec, Chiapas, a state in the southern tip of Mexico bordering Guatemala and the Pacific Ocean, Lucia is just learning how to speak English.
Lucia's father is a farmer in the village of San Antonio Poyono, a three-and-a-half hour walk from Ocotepec, where Lucia and her siblings attend school at a great cost to her parents.
Brody, who was the first dentist the people of Ocotepec had ever seen, set up a dental clinic and extracted teeth with the help of Bob Fiore, an orthodontist from Newton, and several other volunteers.

The variant of Zoque spoken in the communities of Ocotepec and Tapalapa in Northeastern Chiapas also shares these features, but it differs from the other known variants in that a 2nd person patient under certain circumstances may be represented by the ergative prefix rather than the absolutive prefix.
In this paper I will contrast data from Ocotepec with descriptions of Copainalá Zoque, the hitherto best described dialect of Zoque, and propose an account of the person marking in these two varieties in terms of Optimality Theory, where the constraints are based on saliency and ergativity.
The Ocotepec/Tapalapa dialect also differs from other variants of Zoque in their system of person marking in the subjunctive (“dependent” form) of intransitive verbs, a system that has not so far received a theoretically coherent description.

Ocotepec is located about 75 miles SSE from Acatlán, at 6,885 feet elevation
Atatláhuca is located about 6 miles SSE of Ocotepec, at 8,033 feet elevation
For instance, because of the mountainous terrain and few roads, it can take as much as 2 hours in a high ground clearance vehicle to travel the "6 miles" from Ocotepec to Atatláhuca.

The situation is similar to that of Ernesto Perez Hernandez, another child from Ocotepec who stayed with Liegner's family from 2002 to 2003 as he recovered from surgery which allowed him to walk.
Although most families cannot afford to pay the $50 tuition to attend school, Lucia's parents spend a great deal of their income to send their eight children to school, said Carlos Jiminez Aquino, a friend of the Brody-Liegner family who lives in Tuxla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas, in an e-mail.
Their children live a three-hour walk away from the school in Ocotepec, where they rent a room in order to be able to attend the school, Aquino said.

Parallel structures and the syntax of auxiliaries in San Dionicio Ocotepec Zapotec
San Dionicio Ocotepec Zapotec (SDZ) has three auxiliary verbs (ràjc ‘to be possible; can’, byàlòò ‘to stop’, and zéhzàà ‘to continue’) which show an unusual set of morphosyntactic properties.
I will suggest instead that both structures are present in parallel with each other, with neither derived from the other.

 The Chiapas Project
The Chiapas Project has recently completed its 6th trip to the town of Ocotepec, Chiapas, Mexico and what a success it was.

Another exciting development to come from the recent trip is the World Vision, a charitable group with a presence in 19 countries, has decided to expand their community development efforts to southern Mexico.

She will discuss two different representations of "kitchenspace" in Mexico, Laura Esquivel's novel "Like Water for Chocolate" and Dr. Christie's research in three communities in central Mexico.
In the communities of Xochimilco, Ocotepec, and Tececala, the kitchen is a privileged site of cultural reproduction and a gendered terrain in which women play a key role in social relations.
As Dr. Christie explains, the "kitchenspaces" of central Mexico are fertile places to explore the constructions of nature and culture in a rapidly changing world.
