 Ocotepeque Tips
Located in the highlands of Western Honduras, and the seat of government for the department of Ocotepeque, this relatively modern city offers good accommodations, as well as a perfect jumping point into the neighboring countries of El Salvador and Guatemala.
The original town of Ocotepeque was destroyed years ago by a flash flood, so you will not find the town to contain colonial buildings within it.
In addition, Ocotepeque is very close the the Parque Nacional Trifinio or Montecristo, an international protected area that is shared by Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

 Mining in Honduras
In January 2003, the contradictory nature of DEFOMIN and the resulting poor compliance with environmental regulation took its toll out west, with a massive cyanide spill at the San Andrés mine, department of Copán, contaminating the Lara River, which feeds into the river providing drinking water for the town of Santa Rosa de Copán.
Even though local inhabitants reported witnessing company employees hauling away evidence, they managed to amass some 18,000 dead fish, a testament to the environmental destruction caused to the now lifeless river and to the ecosystems it nourishes.
Although different cases are being uncovered and discussed, no recent mining project has received more attention within Honduras than the San Martin mine in the department of Francisco Morazan.
