OctaMED - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OctaMED is a popular music tracker for the Commodore Amiga, written by Teijo Kinnunen.
The distinguishing feature of MED and OctaMED in comparison to other music trackers on the Amiga was that MED and OctaMED were chiefly used by musicians to create stand-alone works, rather than by game or demo musicians to make tunes that play in the context of a computer game or demo.
OctaMED was developed on the Amiga until 1996.

 popboy's OctaMED mini site
OctaMED started out as an Amiga music creation program, where music is composed by creating sample activation points on a vertical time track.
Originally just called MED, this program was based on similar programs at the time on the Amiga, which utilised the Amiga's (then revolutionary) 4 individual sound channels, allowing anyone to create their own 4 track pieces.
Later on, the final incarnation, OctaMED Soundstudio was released, which used 'mixing' to allow the Amiga user to use up to 32 channels of sound.

OctaMED Pro can handle upto 3200 lines/block, so this is obviously the practical upper limit.
Since OctaMED V6, there are also two flag bits in the type field: S_16 0x10 STEREO 0x20 S_16 means that this is a 16-bit sample.
However, OctaMED 6 only supports one attachment, so this field is not used at the moment.

Earlier this version was submitted on the homepage of octamed (http://www.octamed.co.uk), but now they have changed the archive.
And then, if it seems to be extremely difficult to find out how to make that and that command for the new versions in the library-file, its just replacing them with the rexx-commando doing just the same until someone finds out how to implement the function directly.
That means there should be a very small risk crashing octamed when using the plug-ins, as long as the plug-ins itself doesn't crash the amiga ofcourse.

Module file - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MED was not a direct clone of soundtracker, and had different features and fileformats.
OctaMED was an 8 channel version of MED, which eventually evolved into OctaMED soundstudio (which offers 128 channel sound, optional synth sounds, MIDI support and lots of other high-end features).
That is, there are no samples in the module file, rather descriptions of how to synthesize the required sound.

In April 1990 version 2.00 was released with MIDI support as the main improvment.
In 1991 the first version with the name OctaMED was released, the main new feature in this realease was the ability to play eight sounds at the same time only with help of the Amiga's own internal sound chip that is built upon a four-channel limitation.
The last version, called OctaMED Soundstudio, had features like MIDI file support, ARexx support, support for 16-bit and stereo samples, hard_disk_recording, support for up to 64 channels.

Teijo later released a Windows port, but the lack of features and presence of noticeable bugs meant this edition did not achieve the same level of fame as the Amiga release.

OctaMED Soundstudio stores no default instruments in memory, so before you can start work on an arrangement, you have to first use the Load Instruments menu option to bring in some sampled sounds from disk.
OctaMED Soundstudio is able to calculate the digital data that represents the chosen sound sample mix, either storing the resulting waveform as a single sample, or using the data in real time.
The Amiga is unusual in computer terms, in that much of the work that would normally be carried out by a main processor is actually performed by some custom-designed Commodore chips, such as handling the graphics display and retrieving sound samples from memory.

Those that use the popular NSM package, a plug-in and patching system that allows users to add more features and functionality to OctaMED, will be disappointed to hear that this no longer works with the new update.
