Topic: Octave scale

  NewComposer
The seventh tone of the major scale is often referred to as the “leading tone” and usually is followed by the tonic or key center, in this case, B to C, when played in a melody or in a series of two chords.
In a C major scale, the perfect fifth is a G, the perfect fourth is an F and a major third is an E. Guitars have six strings of the same approximate length but different pitches due to the different thicknesses and textures of the strings.
If other major scales involving additional sharps or flats are played when a keyboard is tuned to a C major scale with Pathagorean intervals, the music sounds out of tune to trained musicians.

 MML: Frequency Module
As the octave is not universal, a more neutral term will be used in MML: noteset, which is not restricted to the 8-note, 2:1 relation set, but is used as a generic term that may as well apply to a 5-note "octave".
There are different conventions for numbering octaves, such as the Helmholz method, (starting about in the middle of the piano keyboard and numbering outwards, thus a dual method) and the method used by music physicists (starting at one end, the lower end, and numbering serially upward).
The A notes on beats 1 and 4 are on octave 3, as specified by the noteset attribute; the second beat on octave 4, the third on octave 2.

A Tompkins County Hero George Kahin
This new sound is called an octave because it is the 8th note in a single key's scale in Western music, but in other cultures the second note is achieve by the 5th, 17th, or 22nd note, and is recognized as a renewal of the scale.
For example, in the fourth C scale on the piano, the C is 264 Hz and the D is 297 Hz, for a ratio of 1.125.
In the fifth C scale, the C is 528 Hz and the D is 594 Hz, for a ratio of 1.125.

For the most part there are THREE scales that are the basis for 99% of all western music including almost all of modern jazz and modern classical music.
Therefore a natural starting point for practicing scales is to learn them in Two Octave positions, from each note on the low 'e' to the corresponding note on the high 'e' or thereabouts.
Since the lowest note in the key of C on the guitar is an 'e' you would begin by playing a two octave scale starting on low 'e'.

 Microtonality, Tunings and Modes
In the first scale we use an 8 note segment of the harmonic series from the 8th to the 16th partial to give us a "just major" scale, the second scale defines a nine tone octave based on the 9th partial with a just minor third between the 1st and 3rd scale degrees.
Young's scale is based on an E-flat that is actually closer to D than it is to E-flat in the standard chromatic scale.
But the sixth scale degree, A, is tuned to 440.0 Hz, which means that the scale's lowest E-flat can be calculated by multiplying the lowest A in the standard chromatic scale by the reciprocal of the sixth degree's ratio of 128/189.

The pentatonic scale hasn't seen much use in western music; there are non-western musics that use pentatonic scales, though not necessarily this pentatonic scale, and in any case I know very little about non-western music.
29-note scale does better, but it's hard to believe 29 notes is not too many for a "diatonic-like" scale, that is, a scale one would use directly rather than as a "chromatic-like" metascale.
For the aforementioned 12-of-22 scale the best tetrad score is 13 cents, and there is, as I said earlier, only one such tetrad in the scale.

An octave can be thought of as a two-note melody which can begin with any note; the first note determines the second.
Major Scale The major scale (in one octave) is made up of 7 notes from the chromatic scale.
Major Scale Shape The major scale shape is the most important to guitarists, because this single shape contians other important scale shapes: pentatonic, minor and all of the modes.

Note, however, than whereas in 22-equal you end up with two linear pentatonic scales interleaved (that is, two sets of five contiguous notes on the circle of fifths), here we have no more than three contiguous notes anywhere.
The diatonic scale is not as closely bound to an equal temperament.
Second, I'm not sure to what degree the perceived tuning deficiencies of the 22-equal diatonic scale is learned response due to familiarity with 12-equal scales (as opposed to consonance of triads, which presumably relates to beats and is less subjective).

Ives's 'larger scale' is based on an approximate 48-tET division of the 'octave'.
This scale apparently repeats at the 'major 10th', or 2^(32/24) = 2^(4/3) = 16.00 Semitones, which is the equivalent of the 'octave'.

Major Scale of Musick by David Cherubim
A scale is a ladder or succession of tones (or notes), starting from the keynote or tonic (the first tone on which it starts), and ending with the octave (the last tone, or tone on which it ends).
In this scale, C is the Tonic, D is the Supertonic, E is the Mediant, F is the Subdominant, G is the Dominant, A is the Submediant or Superdominant, and B is the Subtonic or Leading Tone.
This is the first scale that the student of the Guitar should thoroughly learn in vertical position (also called playing in position) and horizontally (playing the scale on one string) in both ascending and descending order.

If you try to play through a one octave scale of Alpha, you'd find there are 4 steps to the minor third, 5 steps to the major third, and 9 steps to the perfect (no kidding) fifth, but, or course, no octave.
That's not so surprising, since this scale is very close in its intervals to the 19 2 Symmetric division, which theorists from Yasser on have praised as a good direction to take eventually as a new diatonic alternative for Western music.
Gamma's scale is yet a "third flavor," sort of intermediate to 'alpha' and 'beta', although a melodic diatonic scale is easily available.

Thus the duality that reigns most relationships between the traditional Western scale and the BP scale is confirmed once more: the first order series of our equation leads to the traditional scale, the second order yields BP.
