Zambrano moved to the United States from his native Ecuador in 1980 to attend Chapman University and later played in the Major Indoor Soccer League.
Zambrano re-surfaced as the head coach of the MetroStars in 2000, replacing the woeful Bora Milutinovic.

Zambrano also created some headlines in the final week of the season by saying the U.S. World Cup forward Clint Mathis needed to see a sports psychologist because of his troublesome behavior on the field.
The MetroStars captured their first MLS Eastern Division title in 2000, and Zambrano led the MetroStars into the first round of the playoffs in 2001 before the team failed to qualify for the postseason in 2002 with an 11-15-2 mark.
