Octet Truss   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Given the uniform distribution of points in such a lattice, plus the equal distances between each point and its 12 nearest neighbors, Fuller called this the isotropic vector matrix (IVM) used it to think about situations with everywhere-the-same energy conditions (what "isotropic" means).
The cctet truss is simply the IVM realized as an artifact for use in engineering applications.
Pioneering work on the octet truss was done in the early 1900s by Alexander Graham Bell

Andreini tessellation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tiling of octahedra and tetrahedra is of special importance since its vertices form a cubic close-packing of spheres.
The space-filling trusses of packed octahedra and tetrahedra was apparently first discovered by Alexander Graham Bell and independently re-discovered by Buckminster Fuller (who called it the octet truss and patented it in the 1940s) [2] [3] [4] [5].
Octet trusses are now one of the most common type of truss used in construction.

United States Patent Office # 2,986,241 OCTET TRUSS -- SYNERGETIC BUILDING CONSTRUCTION
A truss for building purposes in which the main structural elements comprise a plurality of identical struts interconnected in a pattern consisting of octahedrons and tetrahedrons, at least the ends of the struts being X-shape in cross section with the sides of the X lying substantially in planes of the octahedrons and tetrahedrons.
A strut as defined by claim 7, in which the arms of the X are offset from the legs thereof by an amount which brings one surface of each into the plane of the center of the X with the arms disposed on the opposite side of center from the respective legs.
A truss for building purposes in which the main structural elements are struts directly interconnected to one another without the use of hubs in a pattern which includes struts coming into an intersection on at least six intersecting axes, at least the ends of the struts being X-shape in cross section.

THE KISSING POINT By Craig Martin
Essentially, their reuse of the octet truss as the underlying structural frame in certain projects is employed out of pragmatic necessity, and as a challenge to the concept of innovation; the trinity.
Aside from the aesthetic, the octet truss is one of the strongest structures known to man. This came out of Fuller’s research into the packing together of spheres.
By enacting the octet truss, using the geometrical formula and adapting it, without conferring some right to its origin, N55 are engaged with the discovery of ends.

Patent 4711062: Octet structures using tension and compression
Special plates for coupling between the ends of the compression members, and the tension members include slots for receiving the tension members and a central opening for securing the compression member to the plate and for locking the tension members to the plates, with the plates forming parallel planes above and below the octahedral structures.
9 and 10 indicate the mode of extension of the octahedral/tetrahedral, or "octet" structure to a large planar array which may be extended substantially indefinitely.
In one exemplary relatively small truss configuration, the tension members might be approximately 18 inches in length with the compression members being approximately 26 inches in length when the module is erected.

A Fuller Explanation: Chapter Nine isotropic vector matrix
Our familiarity with the IVM enables us to visualize and appreciate Fuller's "Octet Truss." Awarded U.S. Patent 2,986,241 in 1961, this structural framework is so widespread in modern architecture that one might assume buildings have always been constructed that way.
He had built his first Octet Truss—also the first example of what was to become a lifetime habit of approaching structural tasks in revolutionary ways.
Carbon atoms in the structure of diamond take advantage of the strength of tetrahedra; their organization can be thought of as a double octet truss, two intersecting matrices with the vertices of one overlapping the cells of the other.

 Synergetica
Thanks in large part to Fuller's pioneering efforts, the isomatrix is now at least as prevalent as the geodesic dome in architecture and is known to civil engineers as the "octet truss." The octet truss was used to construct Biosphere 2 for example.
The octet truss is also very evident in the pavilion architecture at Epcot's Tommorowland where corporate purveyors of a high tech image are probably unaware to what extent Fuller's vision of the future has permeated their own.
A central dichotomy implied by these two architectural structures, the octet truss and the geodesic sphere (or buckyball), has to do with the symmetry groups to which each belongs.

Externally Octet-Trussed Geodesic Patches   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
One of the reasons I wrote the software to bend the octet truss for use in geodesic patches (see Planning a Bigger Dome, Part II) was to support a large geodesic, keeping it from dimpling when radial pressure was applied.
I placed the truss inside the dome, since it made sense that supporting structures should be underneath the thing they support, and aesthetically, I wanted to preserve the geodesic look on the outside.
And since the trussed geodesic patches could be prefabricated (each patch could be built whole, or as sections of tesselations) they could be shipped to a remote site and then assembled into possibly very large structures.

Under what other names does "Octet Truss" go by?
For this reason the truss has an enormous load-carrying ability; and its strength to weight ratio increases as the truss grows in size, In 1953, at the University of Michigan, Fuller load tested an Octet Truss made of 170 slim 33" aluminum struts, each weighing one-third of a pound.
I am eager to find other test information about the octet truss, but must apparantly either look under some other name, or else get tests made.
I would also be interested in information in recruiting engineering departments to undertake such composite carbon octet truss testing.

If you are talking about improving the octet strut pattern to make it even more extreme than it already is - IMO, a prominent candidate is the rhombic dodecahedron, converted into twelve "shrunken" tets.
Maybe the mismatch between the octet truss and in icosahedral dome had something to do with it.
An octet truss makes an octohedral dome very nicely - but the maths involved in making a high-frequency icosahedral dome out of octet trusses is tricky - and you tend to wind up with a structure covered in irregular seams.

Buckminster Fuller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He developed this in several ways, from the close-packing of spheres and the number of compressive or tensile members required to stabilize an object in space.
Some deep confirming results were that the strongest possible homogenous truss is cyclically tetrahedral, and all solids constructed of regular polygons, except the icosahedron, have a volume that is an integral number of unit-tetrahedrons.
Fuller was born on July 12, 1895 in Milton, Massachusetts, the son of Richard Buckminster Fuller and Caroline Wolcott Andrews.
