October was also the eighth month in the Roman calendar until a monthless winter period (summer in the southern hemisphere) was divided between January and February.
October in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent to April in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa.

As of October 24, investigations in the District of Columbia (DC), Florida, New Jersey, New York City (NYC), Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia have identified 15 (11 confirmed and four suspected) cases of anthrax according to the CDC surveillance case definition (1).
On October 16, a 35-year-old male mail processor, with a history of a chronic, bullous-like skin condition, was taken to a local hospital complaining of a 2-day history of a large pustular lesion on his neck.
On October 19, the patient was admitted to the hospital with chills, dry cough, and pleuritic chest pain.

While Septembers win for the worst historical performance overall, October is the month of the 1929 crash, the 1987 swoon and the stark selloffs of 1997 and 1998.
Maybe investors sell in October because they were trained to long ago: At the turn of the last century, Midwestern banks would draw money from their New York counterparts to pay for grain shipments during the harvest months.
But historically October has also been the month that turns the tide, and traders are hoping that it will put at least a temporary floor under stocks this time around.

History changed on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a basketball, weighed only 183 pounds, and took about 98 minutes to orbit the Earth on its elliptical path.
The story begins in 1952, when the International Council of Scientific Unions decided to establish July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958, as the International Geophysical Year (IGY) because the scientists knew that the cycles of solar activity would be at a high point then.
In October 1954, the council adopted a resolution calling for artificial satellites to be launched during the IGY to map the Earth's surface.

The first excerpt is from the August 1 meeting of PFIAB with the President, when PFIAB members Dr. James Killian of MIT and famed Washington lawyer Clark Clifford recommend that the President authorize CIA to form a domestic task force to watch journalists.
Until the release of these tapes, it was not known that John F. Kennedy shared Richard Nixon’s belief that in the Cold War it was necessary to use the CIA to spy on journalists and their sources.

UPDATE: October 18, 2002: On October 18, the 11th Circuit refused to grant a rehearing in Cartwright v Barnes.
However, even two pages is enough to show that the panel didn't even know what the Georgia law is. The decision erroneously says that Libertarians in Georgia need to petition for their statewide candidates, and that the statewide petition is 1% of the number of registered voters, and the Libertarians aren't challenging that 1% petition.
The judges, in their summary of the law, didn't even know that Georgia has a 1% vote test; they only mentioned the 20% vote threshold, which determines which parties have ballot status for district and county office as well as statewide office.

The tight right handed 7 follows, which then drops down into a left handed hairpin shortly followed by a right handed one, twiddly stuff and where people make mistakes, the circuit then opens up and a gentle left hander leads into the long curving run up to the start finish straight.
