		By the early 18th century, Rhode Island farmers and planters were producing surplus livestock and crops, sometimes with the use of slave labor.
		Rhode Island did not send delegates to the constitutional convention in 1787, and there was widespread opposition in the state to ratifying the Constitution.
		Rhode Island was the last of the original 13 states to ratify the Constitution and did so with the narrowest margin, a vote of 34 to 32 on May 29, 1790.

	Marblehead Magazine: Cat Island History
		Cat Island was an ideal location for such a facility, and the four men bought the island from William Wait for 133 pounds, six shilling, and eight pence, in September of 1773.
		During this time the island was sometimes called "Pollard's Island." In 1869, Andrew L. Johnson bought Cat Island from Pollard for $10,000, but under Johnson's management the hotel foundered, so for several years the hotel shifted from one mortgage proprietorship to another until it finally came up for public sale in 1877.
		All of the campers look forward to their overnight stays on the island, although as darkness settles in, campers and visiting parents share a brief worried moment when the boat leaves the campers alone on the island, with their counselors.

		The first inhabitants of Long Beach Island were the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware, members of the Algonkian linguistic family, that predominated in what is now the Northeast U.S. The Island was first mapped by the Dutch sailing from New Amsterdam.
		A British cutter bound for St, Thomas went aground off Barnegat Light on October 25, 1782 and was soon after seized as a prize of war by Captain Andrew Steelman, of Cape May. Steelman and his crew spent the day unloading the vessel's cargo to the beach.
		The Island is divided into six townships; the largest, Long Beach, comprises all the territory outside the boundaries of the other five.

		Trotsky’s theory of “permanent revolution” said that, historically, an economic system had to be seen as a world system rather than a national one.
