Most people certainly do and in "October Sky" we are allowed to take a peek at the life of a young boy and how his life has been changed when one nights he saw the Russian satellite "Sputnik" in the night sky on its orbit around Earth.
Highly acclaimed, "October Sky" made its box-office debut a few months ago and when Universal Home Video decided to release this film on DVD I was eagerly looking forward to this release.
While the news created almost a panic hysteria within the American population of the late 50s, one boy was watching the night sky with wide-eyed innocence, immediately realizing the scope of this ground breaking invention and what impact it would have on mankind and the world as he knew it.

October Sky is one of those scores that, prior to seeing the film, can be extremely disappointing, but given time and adequate opportunity, a very satisfying score.
October Sky is a very unimpressive score on the surface.
Track 17, Splitting the Sky is also a more positive version of the Homer’s theme as the tempo is a bit faster and the string section beams of hope and accomplishment as opposed to hopeless abandon.

Underneath the blue bowl of sky, rockets are placed upon a pad and launched into the stratosphere...And nothing can match the scene when Homer sees Sputnik for the first time.

Set in Coalwood, West Virginia, circa 1957, "October Sky" begins on the monumental day of Oct. 5 when Russia beat the Americans to space with their first satellite, called Sputnik.
Although "October Sky" follows a fairly predictable pattern, the film turned out to be first-rate, thanks to the delicate and innocent way that the story was told, and in the satisfying way that the characters were handled.

Townsfolk rally behind Homer and his three friends, the "Rocket Boys," while materials and talents are suddenly at their disposal as they aim themselves and their homemade rockets at the scholarships accompanying victory in a national science fair.
For me October Sky is a good pickup movie, and I am not suggesting you take someone you just met in a bar.

October Sky has it all, superb acting especially from Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Cooper, crisp editing and an inspiring storyline, an uplifting soundtrack, and realistic camera work that captures the grittiness of the West Virgina coal life with the innocence of 1950's youth.
