Octopus - Gentle Giant - Similar Albums
Octopus, however, marries the two seamlessly, with the cover speaking for itself, of course.
The album that boosted Focus into at least semi-fame outside of continental Europe, Moving Waves blasts off with their hit single, "Hocus Pocus." Built around a killer guitar hook by Jan Akkerman and a series of solo turns by the band, this instrumental replaced "Wipeout" as a staple of FM radio.
The group's phantasmagorical debut English-language album (sung phonetically), originally released on ELP's Manticore label, is filled with beautifully melodic, classically based songs; strong inclinations toward psychedelia; and a refreshingly open and airy sound, free from the thick Germanic textures of competing classical rock bands....

The boys issued 12 albums between 1970 and 1980, roughly in an arc that ascended to this, their fourth album, and remained at peak level for the next five, descending to a bumpy close with the final three.
Octopus is the first part of the three album high point of their spiky career, culminating in Free Hand, and then fulminating on Interview, etc. The tightness of the playing, the cohesion of the vision was never better here.
This album saw the band moving light years beyond the comparatively more rocking first three albums (although it is really stretching things to use terms like rocking when discussing GG) and composing their pieces with the staggeringly intricate counterpoint and medieval English styles that made them a personal favorite.

Ground and Sky review - Gentle Giant - Octopus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Octopus is one of the most understated of the "conventional-wisdom" great progressive rock albums of the 1970s and someone hearing it for the first time would be well-advised to allow numerous spins for it to sink in before deciding for themselves if conventional wisdom is correct.
It is the album's only all-instrumental track and it continues with the musical approach of the earlier songs: shifts in tempo, shifts in meter, twisting passages that turn on a dime, and attention to counterpoint.
It is probably the first song on the album that I think is less than great, although it's still very good and fits the mood and style of the album well.

The album opener Tell me When was a fine return to form with it's catchy analogue rifts that made it sound so fresh and unique.
Thankfully, Octopus continues to dazzle the listener with one of the highlights such as These are The Days, a song that should have been the next single with a melody to kill for.
The distinctive album sleeve and the singles that followed were designed by Mark Farrow, the man behind the Pet Shop Boys covers.

So it is with this album; yes, there are an insane number of time-signature and key changes throughout, and the emphasis has almost completely shifted from "let's augment good songs with weirdness" to "let's frig everything up as much as we possibly can," which normally would make me somewhat iffy on the album's quality.
The band was apparently contractually obligated to get the album out at a specific time, but instead of taking the time to go into the studio and mull over ideas they might hammer out, they instead kept touring (it's hard to blame them, as it was by most accounts their most successful tour yet).
The greatest thing about this album, and consequently the greatest thing about the band's live abilities, is that (unlike so so so many other bands of all kinds) they know how to preserve the essence of their studio recordings while changing much of the form for live performance.

Octopus Project - Identification Parade (Peek-A-Boo)
The stop-motion animation is vivid and colorful, albeit with jerky motion that isn't quite right, and each element in the scene is doing something odd and interesting, whether it be the child trying to break off a piece of his fellow travellers or the 'tween fist-pumping to the instantly ingrained jingle.
Speaking of getting squeezed in the middle, the same could be said of The Octopus Project's style, as they are one of many bands who have attempted to bridge the gap between rock and electronica.
The Octopus Project is different in that, as the label describes in their mythology, they just picked up some broken old instruments and tried to play music like what they were interested in—they just happened to be interested in both electronica and rock and roll.

This 1973 record captured the band as they were peaking, but because it was not released in the United States by their record label at the time (Columbia), it became a highly prized import and gained a legendary stature.
The album is sequenced quite effectively as it is book-ended by two long, guitar-heavy tracks that I think are the album's most immediately accessible - although this is always a relative concept where Gentle Giant is concerned.
In one of my favorite parts of the album, a synthesizer motif on "Way of Life" flirts with becoming a trite-sounding fanfare, but the plug is yanked out of it first and it collapses into a dissonant gurgle.

Well I mean, sure, the album isn't terrible, but after we're all very disappointed by "Because" the album becomes a quick-changing, disoriented series of songs, all under 2 minutes, all connected.

Following up their stunning debut, Octopus Off-Broadway mere months after its release, Parlour kills the notion of a sophomore slump by smacking you in the face with another brilliant endeavor while most critics are still contemplating words to describe the first album.
Granted it's an album that took five years to record and perfect, but, honestly, the transition is so seamless the album might as well have been written in on studio session.

Jefferson Starship - Red Octopus (Album Review)
As a result, he cautiously devoted himself to the project by lending Caroline to the endeavor, and given that power ballads ruled the airwaves during the mid-’70s, it wasn’t terribly surprising when his contribution became a runaway success.
As for the rest of Red Octopus, it was a hodgepodge of styles that ran the gamut from the arena-ready stomp of I Want to See Another World to the RandB-oriented pop of Sweeter than Honey and from Papa John Creach’s funky hoedown Git Fiddler to the progressive-rock leanings of Pete Sears’ Sandalphon.
Despite the fact that its running time was half that of its counterpart on the album, the single felt utterly complete — so perfect and seamless was the execution of its various edits.

 Quimsy's Mumbo Jumbo: Brazilian Octopus
The surprising meeting happened in 1968 and helped write a little known chapter in the history of instrumental music in Brazil called Brazilian Octopus, whose only release is hunted by record collectors.
Brazilian Octopus was lined up in São Paulo in the beginning of 1968 by Lívio Rangan, manager of a textile factory that promoted musical fashion shows to promote their products.
In fact, Brazilian Octopus was born with uncommon space in the market: a contract for a year of work that included three months of rehearsals during which the musicians received salaries.

While this album doesn't have the rebellious bite of their Airplane recordings, it is a pleasing collection of songs.
In many ways, Jefferson Starship's "Red Octopus" is the quintessential 70s record: the once pioneering, folk-driven prophets of flower power now indulge a variety of post-hippie, west-coast rock styles as they attempt to forge, with uneven success, a radio-friendly sound.

Louisville's Parlour--who spent several years recording material before releasing their offical debut album Octopus Off-Broadway--are the latest band to succumb to this new concept.
Their debut album was a pleasingly mild, calm, chilled-out record.
Perhaps this is an inherent flaw of bands who spend more time in the studio than they do onstage--the chops are good and are tight, but they might be better after spending a few weeks onstage.

Along with THREE FRIENDS, OCTOPUS is a fine example of Gentle Giant 's early-1970s heyday, which featured the oft-underrated British progressive-rock ensemble deftly balancing complex arrangements with catchy melodies and intriguing multi-part vocal harmonies.
While the frenetic instrumental "The Boys in the Band" showcases the group's tight-knit musicianship, "Knots" finds the Schulman brothers (Derek, Phil, and Ray) and company venturing into Queen-like a cappella moments, albeit with an even quirkier approach.
