DVD Review - Octopussy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Full of the stunts and spectacle we’ve come to expect from a James Bond film, "Octopussy" also benefits from strong performances by the ensemble cast who are obviously having a lot of fun filming the movie.
"Octopussy" is presented in an anamorphic widescreen version framed at its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio.
While not particularly original in their presentation, they are a nice addition to the extras and do provide a detailed look at the planning that goes into these major stunt sequences.

Kamal Khan is in turn smuggling them into the west with help from the mysterious Octopussy, a fabulously wealthy woman who lives in a floating palace in India, surrounded by women who are members of her "Octopus" cult, each recognized by a tattooed blue-ringed octopus on their bottom.
Octopussy is more than a smuggler, however, and has many legitimate businesses, including shipping, hotels, carnivals and circuses - the latter being used as an ideal front for smuggling jewellery.
Bond is led to Octopussy and confronts her, only to find out that she feels indebted to him for letting her father, a British Major, commit suicide rather than face the shame of a court martial When Bond was sent after him for smuggling and murder some years before.

Octopussy's full name is unrevealed and according to Maud Adams, she is supposedly half Indian.
Octopussy is also the name of a non-alcoholic cocktail.

 Octopussy: Special Edition (1983)
Connecting the three men is a mysterious female smuggler known as "Octopussy," who must choose her allies by either helping Bond or killing him.
Some of the is the fault of the plot, as Octopussy often has little to do and she ultimately gets stuck in the traditional Bond girl role as rescuee, but Adam's acting appeared bland at best.
Most of the Bond commentaries use statements from a variety of sources, which are then edited together into a coherent whole; only a few follow the "screen specific" format in which one or more participants watch the film and express their thoughts in "real time".

Moore, however, is pitch-perfect in Octopussy, conveying both deadly intent and detached bemusement with a single raised eyebrow.
Khan presides over a massive smuggling and counterfeiting empire along with his partner, the noble-hearted femme fatale Octopussy (a stiff but becoming Maud Adams), who heads up her own band of stunningly beautiful art thieves and acrobats.
Octopussy the film is packed with exciting action sequences, including: a pre-credit sequence featuring a miniaturized jet plane; a nighttime brawl involving a yo-yo chainsaw; a jungle tiger hunt with human quarry; and a dizzying airborne sequence where Bond hangs clings to a prop-driven private plane as it does loops and barrel rolls.

 JB13 Octopussy
Bond and Octopussy share a passionate attraction, but soon 007 discovers that the elegant Kamal Khan is working with a mad Russian officer to hurl mankind into World War III.
Octopussy is a mixed bag, to say the least, and upon my first viewing of the film in 1983, my immediate reaction was that it had just displaced Moonraker as the worst Bond flick of all time.
After subsequent viewings, I eventually decided that the movie isn't as bad as all that, but without a doubt, there are low points aplenty, and the level to which they descend is abysmal indeed.

 OCTOPUSSY - SPECIAL EDITION DVD
Octopussy, featuring Moore's penultimate (which, for the last time, folks, means second-to-last, not really ultimate) portrayal of the beloved secret agent, is a minor entry in the canon populated by stellar moments.
Towards Octopussy's climax (no sexual pun intended), there is a rare incident of self-reflection on the part of the filmmakers in which a group of randy teenagers agree to give a lift to hitch-hiking Bond, only to leave him in the dust when he eagerly approaches their car.
Octopussy is letterboxed at 2.35:1 and enhanced for 16x9 televisions.

 DVD Verdict Review - Octopussy
Having nosed about during his stay with Octopussy, Bond suspects that Kamal and his Soviet patron, General Orlov, have something particularly nasty in store for the West, and finds his worst suspicions confirmed: a nuclear bomb will be smuggled into a NATO base in West Germany during an Octopussy Circus show and detonated.
The race is on, and the tension comes as thick and furious as the impressive action sequences, aboard Octopussy's train, on the roadways, and at the circus performance itself.
Octopussy's army of gorgeous women is also quite a worthy addition to the film, and a credit to those responsible for casting!

 Filmtracks: Octopussy (John Barry)
Octopussy: (John Barry) In the late 1970's and early-1980's, John Barry's affiliation with the James Bond series hit its second roadblock.
The Octopussy score had always been elusive on CD for a number of years, until Rykodisc began releasing the 80's Bond scores in the late 1990's.
Nevertheless, Barry's music for Octopussy is among the better Bond scores --at the same level, if not better, than A View to a Kill.

Octopussy has had many criticisms leveled at it since it slipped into cinema's in 1983.
Octopussy, although not as serious as F.Y.E.O., is filled with everything that makes James Bond movies so much fun: action, exotic locations, beautiful women and that all too familiar Moore's comic touch, which is not overdone.
Octopussy is without doubt one of Roger Moore's best Bond movies and I highly recommend it to any Bond fan or Action-movie fan out there..

"That's My Little Octopussy" and "Bond Meets Octopussy" are very beautiful love pieces based on the main title: "All Time High" that are reminiscent to the true nature of "We Have All the Time In the World" from ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE.
The character of Octopussy, played against formula, in this film seems like a genuine love interest of James Bond as is reflected in these pieces.

Where he got the egg, and what it means, are mysteries for the moment, but the Brits quickly assure themselves that the Russians are involved, and call in 007 to get to the bottom of things.
But then we have Octopussy’s lackey, Kamal Kahn, presumed jewel smuggler and confidant to Orlov, who may or may not be in the world-domination game himself.
The chase scenes through the streets and jungles of India are most entertaining, as are the film’s many terrific fight sequences, two particularly excellent moments occurring atop a moving train and plane respectively.

Octopussy - John Barry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Since Octopussy would be hard to make rhyme and scan during a song, Barry and lyricist Tim Rice settled on All Time High which is third in an informal trio of ego boosting ballads that began with Nobody Does it Better from The Spy Who Loved Me and continued with For Your Eyes Only.
One nice touch is a minor key version used for Death of Vijay, a moment of genuine emotion and regret that is rare in a Bond film.
Perhaps the only disappointment of releasing Octopussy is that its relative newness already ensures good sound quality; almost all of Barry's earlier efforts deserve the same deluxe re-release treatment to improve the sound.

Maud Adams--who'd also been in the Bond outing The Man with the Golden Gun--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime.
The film even has an extra emotional punch, since this time out 007 is not only following the orders of Her Majesty's Secret Service, but he is also exacting a personal revenge: a fellow double-0 agent has been killed.
The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old license to kill, though Moore had one more workout--A View to a Kill--before hanging it up.

Barry uses "All Time High" in a very moving piece called "That's My Little Octopussy" as well as in "Bond Meets Octopussy." There is a credible chase and action theme as well, using Barry's trademark string and drum cues.
