		Such are Octurn, who have, over ten years, swum so many musical currents and absorbed myriad influences, yet never at the expense of their searching, inventive brand of originality.
		The arrival of Octurn on the Belgian scene coincided with the emergence of a new and passionate generation of musicians, but at the heart of their musical adventure from the beginning, seemed to be a new orchestral concept.
		Octurn is currently in residence at ’ Flagey in Brussels.

		Among the other material expressly created for this recording is Octurn trombonist de Masure's own "Round-miroirs." An unvarying swinger, it constructs a brass choir showcase for his axe and leader Van der Werf.
		Without a doubt Octurn could take its place in the first rank of such young, arranger's showcases as Maria Schneider's Manhattan-based group and Toronto's NOJO.
		Since it's made up, for the most part, of well-schooled musicians involved in a panoply of jazz and other, related projects, the players lack the sort of grit and road seasoning that comes to the fore with veteran aggregations.

		Referring to the medieval monastic tradition wherein a different prayer was recited at seven different times of day, Patrick Zimmerli’s Book of Hours attempts to incorporate big-band swing, bop, jazz-rock and contemporary classical music into one cohesive musical setting.
		The attempt fails, but not through any fault of the more-than-accomplished musicians of the Brussels-based collective Octurn.
		The alternations of duet and sextet formats do nothing for the album’s consistency, and even the exciting sound of Octurn’s double rhythm section, led by Bo Van der Werf, can do nothing to alleviate the dullness that permeates this lukewarm album.

	The Squid's Ear
		This is saxophonist-composer Patrick Zimmerli's most recent release with Songlines, this adventurous Vancouver label.
		His last one, The Book of Hours, featured Octurn in an hour long series of compositions respectfully rendered, but lacking the spark of inspired perfomance.
		Competent composer he is, but this is not adventurous music; rather, its sonorities will appeal to those who like sophisticated but tried and true sound conceptions.

	Classical CDs Pt.2 - AUDIOPHILE AUDITION
		NYC-based Zimmerli, whose degrees in composition are from Columbia University, is one of a new breed of composers with one foot in the classical world and the other firmly planted in the jazz milieu.
		He won a 2003 Gil Evans Fellowship Commission, wrote an hour-long suite for the Belgian jazz ensemble Octurn, and has performed on sax on four CDs of his own music, among other achievements.
		He has also performed contemporary classical works of Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter and others for new music concerts.

		Sound of Jazz informs me that drummer Dré Pallemaerts is soon to record his first album as leader, with Mark Turner, Bill Carrothers, Jozef Dumoulin and Stéphane Belmondo, on the Belmondo brothers' B-Flat label.
		Dré's remixing work on Octurn's 21 emanations was excellent and he is perhaps Belgium's best jazz 'n' more drummer (his most recent sideman appearance is on Erwin Vann's excellent Let's Call Ed, with Jozef Dumoulin and Michel Hatzigeorgiou).
		I've never heard him as leader, so I'm looking forward to this one.
