Oda Nobunaga was well on his way to the complete conquest and unification of Japan when Akechi Mitsuhide, one of his generals, forced Oda into commiting suicide in Honnoji in Kyoto.
In 1534, Nobunaga was born to regional daimyo Oda Nobuhide in the Shobata Castle.

Oda Nobunaga (織田 信長 1534-1582) was a major daimyo during the Sengoku period of Japanese history.
Son of Oda Nobuhide, a minor warlord with meager land holdings in Owari province, Nobunaga lived a life of continuous military conquest to eventually conquer most of Japan before his untimely death in 1582.
Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu defeat the combined forces of daimyos Asakura Yoshikage and Nagamasa Azai.

Nobutomo was born in a respected family and went into the service for Shigen.
Nobutomo signed a truce to surrender the Castle after realizing that he had no chance but Nobunaga broke the truce and ordered all troop under Nobutomo as well as his wife, Nobunaga's aunt, be killed.
Nobutomo and the wife was taken to Nagara River where they were hanged on a cross.

Akiyama Nobutomo (秋山 信友; 1531 - December 23, 1575) was a retainer in the service of the Takeda family who served under Takeda Shingen and Takeda Katsuyori.
Nobutomo was born in a respected family and went into the service for Shingen.
After Shingen's death, Nobutomo continued to support Katsuyori and his campaigns, but in 1575 after Katsuyori lost at battle of Nagashino, Nobutomo and Iwamura Castle were left without support.

Swept up by the victorious army of Takeda Shingen, he is given the name Taro and bestowed upon one of Shingen’s generals, Lord Akiyama Nobutomo, initially as a cook’s offsider, then as a stable boy.
A particular oddity is that the labels attached to the victims’ bonces are not their own but those of long dead generals connected with Oda Nobunaga.
There is a mass of anachronisms, many redolent of the Meiji era in the novel’s present and an incredibly garbled account of events in the ‘flashback’ to the Sengoku period, especially the account of Oda Nobunaga which culminates in the strange statement that he was a "master of gekokujo".
