 JAANUS / taruki kouzou 垂木構造
In taruki kouzou a strut resembling a king post, odachi おだち (*udatsu 卯立) or munezuka 棟束, resting upon a longitudinal timber plate, *jimune 地棟 or *tsukabumi 束踏, was used to support the ridge purlin *munagi 棟木 directly.
The strut odachi was stabilized by a rectangular frame, shaped like a Shinto gate *torii 鳥居, comprised of horizontal tie beams *tsunagibari 繋梁 connected to flanking verticals called *toriizuka 鳥居束 'gate posts'.
There were usually three struts odachi: one at the center of the building's longitudinal section, though this was sometimes omitted in smaller structures, and one supporting each end of the ridge purlin.

The Tachi - What's the real difference? - NetSword Discussion Forums   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
For the Japanese samurai, the odachi serves two primary purposes, one in which the weapon is used as a line breaker, and the other in which the weapon is used as a symbol.
Usually for the latter, the Odachi is mounted on what you might call a 'mobile-shrine' accompanied by shrine maidens and priests as a representation of an army.
Was the odachi ever used somewhat in the same fashion as a katana/diato, being held in the sash and worn by it's wielder, or was it simply too large for this and therefore rarely seen?

Odachi were more often used as a symbol of an army, an intimidation weapon, or a gift to the gods at shrines...but when they were used, it was a sight.

To qualify as an ōdachi the sword in question must have a blade length of 3 shaku (90.9 cm) or more, however, as with most terms in Japanese sword arts, there is no exact definition of the size of an ōdachi.
The odachi has been used in various ways, but generally it was utilized as a ceremonial object.
The odachi is mark of a swordsmith's skill and because of this, it was usually offered to the gods by placing it on a shrine as a sign of gratitude.

E-Budo.com - Difference "nodachi" vs. "odachi"
Odachi might be something different to a Nodachi as the a broadsword might be something different to a longsword.
I know of one old, traditional ryu, for example, that uses the term odachi for the standard katana that others might refer to as a daito, while others use the term to describe the nodachi or another really big sword, the chokuto.
Among those schools that use odachi to refer to their standard long swords, they will usually use kodachi rather than shoto or wakizashi to refer to their short swords.

At the same time, Ichigawa brought the odachi around again and managed to slice into Kira’s shoulder just as he was distracted, albeit rather superficially as Kira managed to stop the blade’s path from severing his arm with his pistol.
Knocking aside the odachi with another clang, Kira brought his gun to bear on the shinigami before him as he shoved a bullet into the chamber with his other hand.
Hobbling, Ichigawa swung the odachi wildly and knocked away three bullets with one blow before more took its place with astonishing speed, the steady rapid-fire crack of the pistol resounding through the air as Ichigawa was forced into an immobile position.

Two Kodachi were sometimes carried in one scabbard, one with the handle fittings, the second hidden as the bottom of the scabbard.
These kodachi had a single customized scabbard that caused them to resemble an odachi when sheathed.

a no-dachi has a larger hilt and the masamune is to thin to be classed as an odachi.

Probably nodachi or odachi would be recognized easily enough.
A sword qualifies as an Odachi once its blade is 3 shaku or 91 cm long.
though you risk mistaking it for an odachi which also directly translates to "big sword".(or thick sword) So basically due to its specifications you can still simply call it a katana.
