Odalisque - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An odalisque was a female slave or concubine in the Ottoman Seraglio, tending to the harem of the Turkish sultan.
Odalisques were the virgin slaves of the harem, where they were at the bottom of the social ladder, serving not the sultan himself but rather his concubines and wives as personal chambermaids.
Odalisques were usually given as gifts to the sultan, and many Georgian and Caucasian families even urged their daughters to enter the harem as slaves in the hopes that they would become a palace concubine, favored slave, or wife of the sultan.

Grande Odalisque (1814), by the French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, is considered a neoclassical painting even though the subject matter, a Turkish odalisque, is not typical of neoclassicism.
Ingres’s work is generally believed to be influenced by classical Greek art despite his choice of subject matter.
He is best known for his sensual treatment of the human figure using delicately shaded contours and a rhythmic flow.

The research indicates that Odalisque was stolen in 1941 from the vault where Rosenberg had stored 162 paintings, and was then moved into storage at the Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris.
According to HARP president Ori Soltes, HARP's research was essential to confirm that the painting stolen from Paul Rosenberg was the same painting in SAM's collection and not one of many other Matisse works with similar titles and subjects.
In addition, HARP had to confirm that this painting was not among stolen works that Rosenberg or his family recovered before his death in 1959.

He studied and worked in Rome about 1807—20, where he began the Odalisque series of sensuous female nudes, then went to Florence, and returned to France 1824.
A master draughtsman, he considered drawing 'the probity of art', and developed his style — based on the study of Raphael and marked by clarity of line and a cool formality — in fierce opposition to the Romanticism of Eugène Delacroix.

This painting, an unfinished repetition of the celebrated Grand Odalisque of 1814 in the Louvre, is cited in a list compiled by Ingres of works he had painted between 1824 and 1834.
Although the quality of execution is not as fine as that of the version in Paris, there is no reason to question its attribution to Ingres; nevertheless, the artist may have invited collaboration from his assistants according to his usual practice.
When the Grand Odalisque was exhibited in the Salon of 1819, critics considered the anatomical distortions bizarre and the Turkish accessories out of fashion.

Veiled, secluded, submissive, oppressed—the "odalisque" image has held sway over Western representations of Muslim women since the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century.
Drawing examples from medieval chanson de geste and romance, Renaissance drama, Enlightenment prose, and Romantic poetry, she links the changing images of Muslim women to changes in European relations with the Islamic world, as well as to changing gender dynamics within Western societies.

The works, which are included in a sale of 19th Century Continental Paintings, have been in the family of Monsieur Gilibert since the day that Ingres gave them to his friend and are being sold by one of his descendants.
The large painting, La Grande Odalisque, was commissioned by Queen Caroline Murat of Naples, as a pendant to another painting, Sleeping Woman, Nude, which Ingres had executed for her in 1808.
Instead it was exhibited at the Salon of 1819 where the anatomical liberties that Ingres had taken in the structure of the reclining figure shocked both the critics and the public.

However, his work typically forgoes traditional rural innocence to portray scenes with a definitive style of eroticism, and his mythological scenes are passionate and amorous rather than traditionally epic.
The dark-haired version of the Odalisque portraits prompted claims by Diderot that Boucher was "prostituting his own wife", and the Blonde Odalisque was a portrait that illustrated the extra-marital relationships of the King.
Boucher gained lasting notoriety through such private commissions for wealthy collectors and, after the ever-moral Diderot expressed his disapproval, his reputation came under increasing critical attack during the last of his creative years.
