Odd Hassel was a Norwegian physical chemist and Nobel Laureate.
Hassel's main interest during the first years at the University dealt with inorganic chemistry, but from 1930 onwards his work was concentrated on problems connected with molecular structure, particularly the structure of cyclohexane and its derivatives.
During the early 1950s Hassel investigated the structure of charge-transfer compounds, and after some years work he was able to set up rules for the geometry of this kind of compound.

Sir Derek H(arold) R(ichard) Barton was a British chemist, a joint recipient (with Odd Hassel of Norway) of the 1969 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for research that helped establish conformational analysis - the study of the 3-D geometric structure of complex molecules.
In a brief paper in Experienta entitled "The Conformation of the Steroid Nucleus" (1950), Barton showed that organic molecules in general and steroid molecules in particular could be assigned a preferred conformation based on work of chemical physicists, in particular by Odd Hassel.
Conformational analysis is useful in the elucidation of configuration, in the planning of organic synthesis, and in the analysis of reaction mechanisms.

And in the 1940s and 50s, material scientists learned about the "halogen" bond, a special type of bond that uses the halogen elements of chlorine, bromine and iodine, rather than hydrogen.
Some of those studies led to the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1969 for Norwegian chemist Odd Hassel.
At that point, the limited knowledge of halogen bonds was largely shelved, Ho said, and almost completely ignored by biologists for more than 30 years.
