Golan and those working with him claim to have found a number of remarkable ancient artifacts, the discovery of which have excited great controversy.
The film alleged Golan (working with a team of people, including an expert in ancient semitic languages and an artisan) had produced a number of forged artifacts for sale on the religious antiquities market.

James Ossuary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Identity of the owner was published in the Israeli daily newspaper Ha'aretz: a well-known collector of antiquities, Oded Golan, an engineer living in Tel Aviv, stated that he had bought the ossuary from an Arab antiquities dealer in the Old City of Jerusalem decades before, but had been unaware of the significance of the inscription.
Oded denied that he was the owner of the stone and claimed that the real owner was a Palestinian antiquities dealer who lived in an area under Palestinian Authority and must therefore remain nameless.
Under interrogation, Golan promised to reveal the locations of the stone in exchange for immunity from prosecution but was refused.

Oded Golan, shown in Tel Aviv last week, is on trial for allegedly forging antiquities including an ossuary said to be the burial box of Jesus’s brother.
Oded Golan, the first accused, shot to worldwide attention in November 2002 as the man behind a sensational discovery that rocked the world of biblical antiquities: a first-century stone ossuary, or burial box, with an ancient Hebrew inscription identifying it as the last resting place of ''James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus."
Golan was arrested on suspicion of violating Israel's antiquities laws and repeatedly interrogated while police raided his apartment and two other properties in Tel Aviv.

Golan, 48, a collector born and bred directly in that tradition, first began gathering odd bits of antiquity in the early 1960s while on youthful hikes across the country in an era when field exploration of the Holy Land was a popular pastime for citizens of the young Israeli state.
By the time Golan was drafted into the army at 18, he was a serious collector, patronizing the Arab-owned antiquities shops of East Jerusalem's Old City and the adjacent Silwan Valley.
Handwriting experts largely concurred that the style of the letters was particularly suitable to the period between 30 and 70 A.D. As the evidence of authenticity seems to mount, Golan remains uncertain about his plans for the ossuary.

Golan continues to maintain that the so-called James ossuary, with the inscription "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus," and the "Joash inscription," a stone tablet with fifteen lines of ancient Hebrew detailing improvements at the Temple, are authentic.
Golan's attorneys said that after he was questioned by police in March on the Joash tablet, Golan made no efforts to hide evidence in his home even though he knew that police were still investigating the case.
Golan, who owned both the ossuary and the stone tablet, was under investigation for attempting to sell antiquities that belong legally to the State of Israel.

(Golan said that he had bought the ossuary in the Old City [old Jerusalem] "in the 1970s," paying an Arab antiquities dealer he can no longer identify.) Furthermore, Andre Lemaire, a French paleographic expert who collaborated with BAR in assessing the ossuary's authenticity, had originally claimed that the ossuary was otherwise unadorned.
"Oded Golan's indictment is sad news for every party that defended the ossuary's authenticity," says Nickell, who is author of Detecting Forgery.
Nickell says that the ossuary's defenders turned science and the burden of proof upside down, jumping to the conclusion that the ossuary's inscription was authentic, sticking to their assumptions after new evidence came out, and demanding others to prove it a forgery.
