Beck : Odelay - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
But Odelay, the much-delayed proper follow-up to Mellow Gold, proves the depth and scope of his talents.
Odelay fuses the disparate strands of Beck's music -- folk, country, hip-hop, rock & roll, blues, jazz, easy listening, rap, pop -- into one dense sonic collage.
All of the songs on Odelay are rooted in simple forms -- whether it's blues ("Devil's Haircut"), country ("Lord Only Knows," "Sissyneck"), soul ("Hotwax"), folk ("Ramshackle"), or rap ("High 5 [Rock the Catskills]," "Where It's At") -- but they twist the conventions of the genre.

Odelay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Three songs from these Bong Load sessions have been released: one, "Ramshackle", on Odelay, and two others: "Feather In Your Cap", which was released on its own as a single and on the soundtrack to Suburbia, and "Brother", which was not available to the public until the release of "Jackass" in 1997.
He misheard the Mexican slang phrase "รณrale" in one of the songs as "Odelay" and transcribed it as such.
In 2006, Odelay will be released as a two-disc Deluxe edition set as part of Universal Records' Deluxe series and in recognition of the album's tenth anniversary.

All-Reviews.com Music Review: Odelay by Beck
Where It's At is an excellent dance song with a lot of great touches, like when his filtered voice segues into a computer voice singing,"got two turntables and a microphone." He adds good texture with jazzy horns and shifts mood and tempo but everything fits together and the beat keeps moving.
He removes the big beat and replaces it with light percussion and keyboards as Beck sings a elegant psychedelic ballad about "a strange invitation." Mutations is also brought to mind by Ramshackle, the goofy country blues of Lord Only Knows and the countryish dance rock of Sissyneck.
Odelay also has more obscure vocal and beat experiments like Derelict, Novacane and High 5 but generally Odelay is accessible.

Beck's ingenuity was displayed on a minor scale before Odelay, and after this critically acclaimed award-winner, he's been a household name.
Odelay could be an album for a party, for reading, for crying, for screaming, for laughing, you name it.
Odelay is one of those albums that leaves you smiling and thinking all at once.

Odelay holds its place as one of the essential CD's of the 90's.
ODELAY was embraced at a time when American culture was drenched in irony and pop-culture regurgitation.
Not surprisingly, the ironic-nostalgia fad ran SO deep that no one stopped to think about how the music would age once the retro-waves it was riding crashed on the sand...hence the blind worship of this record.

 SALON: "Eclectic Light Orchestra"
"Odelay" is as seamless and coherent as any mix of honkytonk stomps, jeep-rattling beats, twisted electro-grooves, plaintive pop ballads, and genuinely bizarre lyrical vignettes could possibly be.
What's most startling about "Odelay" is not just the mere presence of this unholy conglomeration of influences but the fact that it all seems so damn natural.
Pulling odd bits of vinyl from old stacks of milk crates, sorting through dusty boxes of cassette tapes, perfecting your slide guitar licks and honing your mike skills in the same quiet way -- making us a collage, saying, "This is what it's like." So, we're sorry, we guess.

Like its creator's freewheeling songwriting process, ODELAY is a monument to wondrously precise pastiche.
ODELAY accounts for all those things, too, but it also furthers the seamless, rump-shaking sheen of its collage nature, turning process into possible meaning.
ODELAY is and incredible, fun, and wonderfully awakward and skewed vision of the 90s, and it proved that the era had more to offer than Nirvana ripoffs.

As it turns out, Beck isn't just a funny guy with a good blues-rap hybrid novelty up his sleeve--he's a funny guy with a deep understanding of the history of pop music, an unstoppable universalist impulse, and a whole lot of excellent songs up his sleeve.
Beck can turn a surreal pomo phrase like nobody's business, and he knows a good drum break when he hears one; his greatest strength, though, is having enough respect for tradition to make it sound modern.
On the justifiably critically acclaimed 'Odelay' Beck seems to try his hand at virtually every genre under the sun........And seems to succeed at each increasingly ambitious attempt.

Paste Magazine :: Feature :: Beck :: Breaking The Narrative (Page 1)
After Odelay, I was probably thinking of doing the opposite, to go from being the cut-it-up, sample guy to doing something completely live and do it in 14 days,” he says, referring to Mutations, the album that was so dissimilar to Odelay that Geffen refused to market it as the album’s follow-up.
Some of those records were kicking around for years before they were released, so I sort of got an honest reaction that wasn’t based on what kind of success the records had.
Listening to Odelay today, it’s easy to re-experience that original bewilderment, as the album remains a gloriously noisy, disjointed affair, screeching electronics and creaking tape splices woven together into a surreal sonic patchwork.
