It is produced through esterification, where coconut is made to react with methyl alcohol with the use of sodium hydroxide as catalyst.
Romblon Rep. Eduardo Firmalo said the plant would have a big impact on the province’s economy — which is among the poorest in the country — because it will not only give the residents jobs but also increase their income.

By MADEL R. The first island-based Coco-Methyl Ester (CME) plant was inaugurated yesterday by the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) in Odiongan, Romblon, in a bid to help boost the coconut industry and establish the commercial viability of producing a biofuel plant.
Romblon, the second largest coconut producer next to Quezon province, produces 720,000 coconuts per day, and has marble and coconut as its primary products.
It was chosen as the first CME plant site collaborated by the government and the private sector because it is said to benefit the farmers and consumers in the island province and also because of the diesel demand for power and transport and the fluctuating copra price in the province.
