Into this upper crust environment, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was born, on November 4, 1933, in Zungeru, in northern Nigeria.
Ojukwu's main proposal to end the interethnic strife was the creation in Nigeria of a weak federation-type government, which would permit the Igbo and the other principal ethnic groups substantial political autonomy.

OJUKWU, CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU [Ojukwu, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu], 1933-, Nigerian general and secessionist.
Of Igbo background, he joined (1957) the Nigerian army and rose to become (1966-67) military governor of E Nigeria.
That region seceded (1967) from Nigeria as the Republic of Biafra, with Ojukwu as head of state.

It lost the oil fields in the war, and more than one million of its civilian population are thought to have died as a result of severe malnutrition.
At the time of its surrender on Jan. 15, 1970, Biafra was greatly reduced in size, its inhabitants were starving, and its leader, Ojukwu, had fled the country.
During its existence Biafra was recognized by only five nations, although other countries gave moral or material support.
