The Raincoats - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The band went on their first UK tour with Swiss female band Kleenex, in May 1979 after Rough Trade Records released their first single "Fairytale in the Supermarket"/ "In Love"/ "Adventures Close to Home".
Palmolive left the band after their seminal first album The Raincoats and Ingrid Weiss joined in 1980, when the band began recording their second album Odyshape, and toured Europe and the east coast of the USA.
Guest musicians on Odyshape included Robert Wyatt, This Heat's Charles Hayward and Richard Dudanski.

Odyshape IS better - every single rule in the rulebook of rock and roll is chucked away gleefully here.
The Raincoats and Odyshapes are both way better than they deserve to be (from the point of view of someone who usually prefers music by people with traditional technical competence).
Beyond that, djangos.com has at least one used copy of the self-titled release and Odyshape on the website for $8.99 (not including +10% discount promotion) and their shipping's generally reasonable.

It was the late Kurt Cobain (with some help from labelmates Sonic Youth) that initiated Geffen's reissue of the Raincoats'; catalog.

 MUSEUM RITTER - Imi Knoebel
Many of these monochromatic paintings were made for a specific spatial or light situation.
Odyshape III yellow is not a two-dimensional painting, but rather an installation of a quadratic surface behind which flatly pressed aluminum pieces seem to protrude.
With only partially visible elements, this work dances around the topic of the hidden, an issue that Knoebel also addressed in other works.

Odyshape blew my mind - the instrumentation, the singing, the lyrics.

Though I tend to like girl punk groups across the board at a higher perecentage rate than their male brethren (a weird law of averages, I guess...fewer bands=better bands) I hadn't heard the above album until quite recently.
I have the first Raincoats album, but somehow "Odyshape" managed to elude my awareness of its very existence.
I also hear the proto-"world music" from stuff like Don Cherry's "Mu" albums and 70s Ornette Coleman in "Odyshape." There's a couple of other things I can think of to compare the album to as well, but mostly what strikes me is how essentially contemporary it sounds.

Cobain's suicide ended those plans, but the band went on a triumphant American tour anyway.
A John Peel session from April 1994 (two new songs, "No One's Little Girl" from Moving and "Shouting Out Loud" from Odyshape) was released on Shelley's label as Extended Play.
The noisy avant-continental "Don't Be Mean" (unveiled on the EP) take slipperier turns through the band's past.

 Oh bondage up yours!
Of all the punk albums I own, "Odyshape" is the one that just takes my breath away.
An experimental album and the third from this British band, Odyshape has definite reggae and folk influences, accentuated by shrill violin and sparse guitar, but is fiercely unique.
The lyrics, sung softly and in an almost wailing tone and combined with the poetic lyrics of songs like "Shouting Out Loud" and "Dancing in my accentuated by shrill violin and sparse guitar, but is fiercely unique.

Odyshape and "looking in the shadows" were actually in the pile of things I wanted.
On first listen, I found Odyshape veering towards unlistenable, but unlistenable in such a way that I figure once I manage to stretch my ears around it, the music will be very intriguing.
I had such a tape in my car on my recent week-long vacation to Southern Utah, and it had one song ("Family Treat") from Odyshape and another ("Pretty") from looking.

Charles Hayward of This Heat (see earlier post), Robert Wyatt, and others joined them for the 2nd (1981) LP, Odyshape, more oblique and quiet but also very good.
The following year, they released a 7" single that I had an even harder time finding than the first one.

(i still have these wonderful little artifacts.) i even reviewed "odyshape" for my high school paper-although it may have fallen on deaf ears as i was pretty much alone in my musicial tastes.
There were a couple of references/ questions about Ana and The Raincoats which I wanted to answer: We just got hold of some stock last month of The Raincoats, Odyshape, Moving and Looking in the Shadows.
These cds and Ana's new releases are all available via mail order at www.roughtrade.com - but I also know that Chicks on Speed will be distributing Ana's stuff in the U.S.A from this week onwards.

My logical mind wants to call them the missing link between The Raincoats' Odyshape and Mary Margaret O'Hara, but comparisons of that sort rarely do justice to the actual music.
The first album, drum, is particularly good; I like albums that peak and valley, and while mettle is a nice enough album, it seems to find its niche and stay there.

The rest of the material just plays havoc.
On Odyshape, the band expanded the scope of its sound: the mingling of snappy acoustic and jangly electric guitars provides saner contrast to the violin shrieks.
There's even a poignant song about a girl who's "Only Loved at Night." But the Raincoats are still no easy listen.
