The Zombies: Odessey and Oracle: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
While Odessey and Oracle is definitely one of the great rediscovered works of the psychedelic era-- an under-appreciated record of beauty and foresight-- albums like Love's Forever Changes, Van Dyke Parks' Song Cycle, and even the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, expanded minds with wider sonic palettes and more daring song structures.
While it wasn't exactly "freakout" music aimed at squares, Odyssey and Oracle is still notable for its experimental bend.
Odessey and Oracle stands as the band's fully realized statement of intent, the parting shot from one of the few originals in the devolving tail-end of the 1960s.

And indeed, when Argent took his nimble fingers to the keys and Blunstone slid his first note into the microphone, perfectly echoing that golden marriage of sound that keeps radio stations playing their singles today, it seemed as if the audience, as well as the music, had escaped any evidence of age since 1968.
The set drew largely from their 1968 release, "Odyssey and Oracle," as well as hits from the two member's solo careers.
Although the album was a driving force in the classic British invasion, and has spread its influence across decades and genres, such as in indie-pop bands The New Pornographers and The Apples in Stereo, The Zombies immediately disbanded after its release.

Of all the 1960s British beat-groups, the most undeservedly unsuccessful were The Zombies: 'She's Not There' may have been a huge hit in America and may be one of the great golden oldies, but it didn't even make the top ten in Britain.
And their classic second album Odyssey and Oracle had to wait for years before its status was properly acknowledged.
I know this hasn't got much to do with the 1970s, but I wanted to make the point anyway: they were truly brilliant and Colin Blunstone is still one of the great vocalists in British pop.

Those of you who that have heard Kelley's last album, Nothing/Everything, will be glad to know that, as good as that album was, in retrospect it has merely served as a warmup to what we have before us now.
This disc is replete with the kind of lush, melancholic songs that made The Zombies' Odyssey And Oracle the landmark disc that it is. Unlike many artists who fully utilize the computer age by injecting as many artificial devices as they can, Kelley is accompanied by a full orchestral complement on several of these tracks.
Her voice is yin and yang rolled into one; a girlish exterior which belies a depth and maturity not found in most contemporary practitioners of the "new easy listening" genre, and the band is clearly up to the task of backing her.
