As Pitcairn Island is a high volcanic island with no fringing coral reef, and only a very small beach, the Pitcairners travel 80 miles to the north of their home to visit Oeno Island, a tropical atoll with a central protected lagune.
As Oeno Island may only be visited with the prior permission of the Commissioner for Pitcairn Islands in New Zealand, the islanders feel free to leave their possessions on the island, knowing they will not be taken or vandalized.
Oeno Island is as flat as atolls usually are, with mangrove shrubs, pandanus and smaller herbs on it.

 Pitcairn Islands Study Center
Several ships have been wrecked on Oeno’s reef, perhaps the most notable being the American clipper Wild Wave, Captain Josiah N. Knowles, which while in ballast from San Francisco was wrecked on the Oeno reef on March 15, 1857 (Ford, Pitcairn: Port of Call, 1996).
Oeno is a beautiful island, untouched and surrounded by white sandy beaches.
Oeno is also a retreat for the Pitcairners, who usually make a trip during the summer to enjoy the beaches that Pitcairn does not have.

The winds were fairly high and we circled the island a couple of times.
Between the reef and the island is a large lagoon.
Oeno island is surrounded by a lagoon that is formed by the coral ring surrounding the island at quite a distance.

Ducie Island was discovered on 16th March 1791 by the notorious Captain Edward Edwards of HMS Pandora while on his way to Tahiti in search of the Bounty mutineers.
The landscape of the island was remarkably different to that of Ducie, with high cliffs of limestone dotted with pandanas and coconut palms in amongst the lower lying shrubs.
The Australs are comprised of five inhabited islands - Rimatara, Rurutu, Tubuai, Raivavae and Rapa - flanked by two uninhabited atolls - Marie (Hull) Island to the west and Marotiri (Bass) Island to the east.

Oeno, located 121 km northwest of Pitcairn Island, is a small circular-shaped atoll formation of 1.6 km² in area.
The atoll rises steeply from the ocean bed and consists of an encircling reef crest that encloses a shallow lagoon averaging 3-6 m in depth.
The largest islandOeno — is densely vegetated with atoll forest, Pandanus, Coconut and scrub, while Sandy Island (on the north side) forms a small shifting sand cay.

Hepburn (in prep) recommends that the island be made rat-free to provide a secure nesting site for seabirds, especially gadfly petrels (Pterodroma spp.) which are heavily predated by Polynesian Rats on Henderson.
Coconut Crabs (Birgus latro) occur on the island, and the undisturbed lagoon supports prolific fish populations.
Scientists from the Pitcairn Islands Scientific Expedition (based on Henderson) visited the island at approximately three-monthly intervals during 1991 and early 1992.

 PITCAIRN ISLAND SOLAR ECLIPSE 2005
On the 8th of April, 2005 a Annular Solar Eclipse was experienced by a long narrow band of the Pacific Ocean.
Oeno is uninhabited but the rare chance to witness such an event was not to be missed by the many Eclipse chasers and so two cruise ships converged on the area locating themselves about 10 km north of Oeno where totality was at its maximim time length.
With careful planning and the help of the Pitcairn Island Philatelic Bureau and friends on board the cruise ship "Discovery" we were able to arrange some rare "Oeno Island Solar Eclipse" covers and postcards.

Leaving thirty men on Oeno the captain and six others sailed one of the ship's boats to Pitcairn which they found to be uninhabited, the population having been removed to Norfolk Island two years earlier.
Unfortunately, as the boat passed from the smooth waters of the lagoon into the surf, it capsized and the captain was drowned.
Upon reaching Pitcairn the crew and passengers were treated to the customary hospitality before being taken from the island before being taken from the island by the "Leicester Castle".

Ducie Island lies nearly 300 nm East from Pitcairn, Henderson about 100nm ENE, and Oeno Island is situated 75nm NNW of Pitcairn.
Oeno and Ducie are low lying atolls and Pitcairn a volcanic island while Henderson is a Makatea Island, meaning an old coral atoll that has been uplifted so exposing the coral rock high above the sea.
This was the leg from Cocos Island to the Galapagos.

 DISCOVERY
The vessel was built in 1972 in Germany as the "Island Venture" but spent the 1974 to 2001 period as the "Island Princess" of Princess Cruises.
MV Discovery was en route from Pitcairn Island to Easter Island, and in the narrow 16-mile corridor from which the complete eclipse of the Sun could be observed.
Observers and eclipse-chasers aboard MV Discovery described the occurrence to be “the most colorful eclipse they have yet witnessed.” What made this solar eclipse particularly special was the near-perfect match in apparent size between the Sun and Moon.
