Oerlikon 20 mm cannon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The design of the Oerlikon 20mm cannon, by Reinhold Becker dates back to 1914, and is still in use today, after having been used extensively during the Second World War.
In 1935, the cannon was adapted by Great Britain to be used for in the Royal Navy for the short-range anti-aircraft role.
The Oerlikon 20mm cannon is a monotube cannon with a large coil around it.

Becker series of 20mm cannon.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The Becker Cannon cartridge, which was actually 19.6mm, used a high explosive projectile with a contact detonator.
Eventually the gun was redesigned to use a 20mm diameter projectile and the case was significantly lengthened, becaming the famous 20mm Oerlikon cartridge.
The subsequent Oerlikon guns designed to use this cartridge were, probably, the most widely used 20mm anti-aircraft guns before and during WW2 and possibly since.

ANOTHER MISSED OPPORTUNITY: THE OERLIKON FFL CANNON
Little interest was shown in these cannon at first, the main user in the early 1930s being the French Air Force, which used versions of the FFS (known as the HS.7 and HS.9) in some fighters.
The weight was reduced from 43 to 34 kg (later reduced further to 30 kg) and the reduced inertia enabled the rate of fire to be increased to 490-500 rpm.
The Japanese made various modifications to the gun but the first significant one came with the introduction of a belt feed in the Model 4: all Oerlikons were magazine-fed (as were the German MG-FFs with the exception of an electric-powered feed used by some night fighters).

Examples of the second approach are the MG FF and MG 17 weapons of the Bf 109E, the two.50 and four.303 Brownings of the early P-51, or the two 20mm cannon and two 7.7mm guns in the A6M2.
The disadvantage of cannon was that their weight and recoil precluded the use of more than one or two.
Especially the larger cannon were intended to destroy the structure of the aircraft itself: A 30mm hit could cut a fighter in two, and put a large hole in a heavy bomber.

The relatively modest performance of the Oerlikon cannon has been generalized by many people to the inaccurate conclusion that all WWII 20mm cannon were slow-firing, low-velocity weapons.

Typical armament was two 7.9mm machine guns in the upper engine cowling, two Mauser 20mm cannon in the wing roots (each of which could fire 700 rounds per minute, much faster than the equivalent British cannon), plus two more slower firing (450 rounds per minute) Oerlikon 20mm cannon farther out in the wings.
The wing root MG was replaced by 20mm cannon in the A-3, and this change was also carried over in subsequent 190's.
Internal armament was reduced to the cowl mounted MG and the 2-20mm cannon in the wing roots.

 The Mitsubishi Zero - Armament
The Naval 1937 specifications for the 12-Shi fighter called for an armament of two 20mm cannon, two 7.7mm machine guns and provision for two 60kg bombs.
The wing armament comprised various versions of the Type 99 cannon, a version of the Oerlikon 20mm weapon, manufactured under licence by the Dai-Nihon Heiki Company.
The versions used in the Model 22 appear to have been drum-magazine types, but later models were belt-fed. The long-barrel type used in the Model 22a were known as the Model 2 Mark 3, and had a rate of fire of 490rpm with a muzzle velocity around 2000ft/see and a range up to l000m.

The key difference was of course the high explosive in the 20mm shells, which was enough to give the Bf 109E-4 almost double the destructive power of the British fighters.
The low-velocity cannon were particularly difficult to hit with at long range, because of their curved trajectory and long flight time.
However, the rapid introduction of armour protection during 1940 greatly reduced the effectiveness of all rifle-calibre machine guns and gave the cannon a clear advantage, especially against bombers which were easier to hit but more difficult to destroy.

The BF109 was given 20mm cannons by Willy Messerschmitt back in the day to increase its firepower, so in a realism mod you can use those to try and make up the difference of not having 8 rifle caliber machine guns.
But when you figure in the cannons the German aircraft should then be able to do as much damage in the same amount of time, not due to rate of fire but do to the increased lethality the cannons provide and I dont see that happening.
The 4 20mm wasn't that common on the XIV, most of them had the 2X.50+ 2X20mm combination which did pack a punch but a very short one (only 120 rounds per gun on the Hispanos and 2.50's are used for lining up the shot, 2 of them is pretty weak).

C & R Weapons For Home Defense - BeyondUnreal Forums
The Oerlikon gun is an excellent choice for areas in which an increased threat level calls for a more powerful weapon than the.50-cal.
The ammunition of choice for the Oerlikon in a home defense role is the Mark 9 AP-T (armor piercing tracer), a potent 1,883-grain bullet with 427 grains of powder.
While the rate of fire on this weapon is much lower than that of the M2 or Oerlikon, at a modest 50 RPM, the Mark 33/34 makes up for this limitation with extremely high hitting power.

In one of the early attempts to upgun the Ferret an Oerlikon 20mm cannon was ring-mounted on a Ferret to suit the requirement of an unnamed african country.
The main effect of the gun and ring mount was to seriously overload the front suspension and cause some some serious handling problems.
The project was abandoned when it was realised that the number of modifications neccessary to the vehicle suspension made it an expensive proposition.

A 20mm cannon relies rather on KE for armoured targets and on HE for soft targets, though it's HE rounds have much more KE than those of the GL.
If that worked you will see a comparison of the 20mm GL rounds to a 5.56; anything that short can't be a cannon round, though the projectile itself could be taken from a 20mm cannon round.(if that didn't work check http://www.fas.org).
Though the 20mm GL is supposed to have greater range than the 40mm currently in use, it still doesn't qualify as cannon IMO.

 Gun effectiveness in 2.7
In WB 2.7 the impact of 5-10 20mm on a single engine fighter is almost invariably crippling and 10-15 20mm rounds will result in an immediate kill.
The theory was that the high volume of fire would result in a higher probability of some hits and that a small number of hits with heavy MG bullets was likely to cripple a single engine fighter since one of those bullets was likely to hit a critical component (pilot, engine, fuel, ammunition, etc..).
In other words between structural failure and magic bullets, 4 20mm rounds should be very likely to do the trick one way or the other (with structural failures and magic bullets both providing about half of the kills).
