  Otzi The Iceman - Crystalinks
Otzi the Iceman (also spelled Oetzi and known also as Frozen Fritz) is the modern nickname of a well-preserved natural mummy of a man from about 3300 BC, found in 1991 in a glacier of the Otztal Alps, near the border between Austria and Italy.
Tom Loy, 63, had analysed DNA found on "Oetzi", the Stone Age hunter whose remains were discovered in 1991.
Oetzi's mummified remains emerged from a melting glacier in the Italian Alps in 1991, since when he has undergone intense examination.

The 5300-year-old mummy, known as Oetzi after the Oetz Valley region between the two countries where he was found, was at the centre of the bizarre ownership row after his corpse was found on the mountainous border region separating the two, in the disputed region of South Tyrol.
Oetzi's corpse was discovered under a melting glacier in Tyrol in 1991 and, although he is now housed in Italy's Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, both countries had claimed ownership of the frozen corpse.
Oetzi is now on display in a special glass walled fridge and kept at a temperature of minus six degrees centigrade at a humidity of 98 per cent in the Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano.

FOXNews.com - Alpine 'Ice Man' Was Killed by Arrow in Back - Science News | Science & Technology | Technology News
ZURICH, Switzerland — A prehistoric hunter known as Oetzi whose well-preserved body was found on a snow-covered mountain in the Alps died more than 5,000 years ago after being struck in the back by an arrow, scientists said in an article published Wednesday.
Oetzi, also known as the Iceman, caused a sensation after his body was discovered by hikers in 1991 on a glacier 10,500 feet above sea level on the border between Austria and Italy.
The body has provided researchers with a wealth of information about the late Neolithic Age, or 3,300 to 3,100 B.C. Archaeologists believe Oetzi, who was carrying a bow, a quiver of arrows and a copper ax, may have been a hunter or warrior killed in a skirmish with a rival tribe.

Stone Pages Archaeo News: Did Oetzi die in boundary dispute?
Oetzi was discovered high in the Italian Alps in 1991 with a collection of weapons that included a bronze axe, bow, a quiver of arrows, a flint dagger and a smaller, sharper knife.
Traces of three different mitochondrial DNA sequences were found on Oetzi's flint dagger, on an arrowhead and on a broken shaft in his birch bark quiver.
A fourth DNA sample from the back of Oetzi's leather coat is taken as indication that he may have supported a companion on his shoulders after the fight.

Stone Pages Archaeo News: Oetzi murdered in power play?
Oetzi the Iceman, the world's oldest and best-preserved mummy, might have been murdered in a struggle for power, according to a new theory that identifies the 5,300-year-old mummy as the powerful leader of a Neolithic community.
As he emerged from the ice, the mummy was still wearing goatskin leggings and a grass cape, while a copper-headed axe, a quiver full of arrows and a medicine kit with herbal remedies were lying nearby.
The researcher believes Oetzi did manage to flee up the mountain until he collapsed and was entombed in the Similaun Glacier's ice.

Detective work, persistence pay off in project to recreate ancient footwear   (Site not responding. Last check: )
But if they were good enough for Oetzi, the 5,300-year-old man found in an alpine glacier in 1991, they're good enough for the modern foot, insists Petr Hlavacek, a Czech shoe expert who has created replicas, taken them out for a walk and pronounced them far better than most modern footwear.
Scientists have already learned much from the hunter nicknamed Oetzi (rhymes with curtsey) -- that his last meal included venison, that he was killed by an arrow, and that he probably spent most of his life within about 50 miles of where his body was found.
A plaster model of Oetzi's small, slender foot -- the size of a modern 12-year-old boy's -- sits on a shelf in his office.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Infertility link in iceman's DNA
Oetzi's body was found in the melting ice of the Schnalstal glacier in the Italian Alps in 1991.
Dr Rollo said the idea that Oetzi might have been infertile was intriguing, and while emphasising that this was purely speculation, he noted it would be interesting to pursue the idea further.
At first it was thought Oetzi had died from exposure to the cold, but the wounds on his hands and the arrowhead would seem to indicate he died as a result of injuries he received in a fight.

Oetzi the Shaman and the Iceman's Curse
Well, science has evolved quite a bit since then, and now we have all kinds of tests to get a more precise look at who he was.
Data from tooth enamel, soil and water samples has already shown that Oetzi probably grew up in the Pustertal region south of the Alps and left his home valley when he was 20 to 30 years old.
Previously, researchers had detected (through xray) an arrowhead in his shoulder blade, but new DNA tests of the iceman's clothes reveal four different people - so perhaps Oetzi was involved in a struggle that led to his death.
