Ashwin Mahesh on an inhuman bondage
This is research into a more egregious violation, an accounting of the 15 million children held in bondage as a routine condition of their employment, perpetually paying loans and bonds that are too usurious to overcome.
Despite a plethora of laws and policies outlawing the employment of children in various industries, and prohibiting bondage of any kind whatsoever, millions of adult labourers are tethered to their jobs, and millions more kids are left with little alternative but to expend their childhood in labour.
The demand for reform and humane working conditions, says the children's rights advocate and author of the new report, must be raised at several levels, and not only when someone highlights such gruesome realities.

Proof.- Virtue is human power, which is defined solely by man's essence (IV:Def.viii.), that is, which is defined solely by the endeavour made by man to persist in his own being.
For I do not venture to deny that a human body, while keeping the circulation of the blood and other properties, wherein the life of a body is thought to consist, may none the less be changed into another nature totally different from its own.
For the human body is composed of very many parts of different nature, which stand in continual need of varied nourishment, so that the whole body may be equally capable of doing everything that can follow from its own nature, and consequently that the mind also may be equally capable of forming many perceptions.

Writing in the Milan daily, Corriere della Sera, Mr Messori said cardinals were beginning to discuss the possibility that the Pope might invoke article 332 of the code of canon law and retire for some well-earned rest in a remote monastery in his Polish homeland.
A Pope who visibly shares the sufferings of Christ in his own flesh during the week that commemorates His passion may be a powerful icon for the Christian message on the mystery of human redemption, but it raises the question whether the government of the church is safe in such feeble hands.
It is hard for them not to acknowledge his heroism now, as he bears the cross of human frailty before the eyes of the world.

From his experiences in school to an artist's paris, to the hospitals of London and the dregs of society, Of Human Bondage details his search for himself and for his own brand of reality as he waits, desperate for life to finally begin.
However, "Of Human Bondage" is an exception to that rule.
Is amazing how one writer can get all those human emotions and write about them, one can actually feel what the characters feel and get involved into their lives.

Although famous for its romance of Philip and Mildred, the latter is not even mentioned, in my copy, until a third of the way through the vapid life of the extraordinarily selfish Philip Carey, with his incessant vaporings about how bad he has it just because he has a club foot.
I read the whole thing but OHB would be vastly improved by abridgment.

The debt reduction process will need to be based on the human needs of the countries, says Sachs, a plan that would include a timetable that takes into account social program efforts.
The process, says Sachs, should be one in which debtor countries, in cooperation with creditor countries, present blueprints for progress, and creditors signal concurrence by forgiveness of debt.
A key part of any such program, says Sachs, would be a commitment by HIPC countries that additional resources would be targeted for basic human needs, such as immunization coverage, improved mother-and-child care, HIV prevention, and efforts to increase primary school enrollment rates.

A lot of the time when we are called upon to review a movie of the vintage of Of Human Bondage, we look at it as more of a historical amusement rather than as the preservation of a classic movie.
Of Human Bondage, in contrast, is an excellent drama, and pretty much holds its own story-wise to this day.
There are a few obvious clangers which show that this movie is 60 years old (Bette Davis commenting on her screenplay age - "I'm getting on...24") but the story is as valid today as it was in 1934 when this movie was made.

These circumstances led the young Maugham to be shy and withdrawn; consequently he became an observer rather than an active participant, but he was able to turn this to his advantage as a writer.
The unhappiness and anxiety of his early life were recounted in his autobiographical novel, Of Human Bondage (1915), in which his stammer became a deformed foot for the protagonist.
With the exception of Of Human Bondage, Maugham did not return to writing novels or short stories for more than 10 years.

Most of the problems are because of lack of monitoring and regulatory mechanism for efficient use of facilities and effective service-delivery in health, education and social welfare.

Left unchecked, human trafficking will become the most lucrative of the three criminal industries within 10 years, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said at a trafficking conference in February 2003.
Together, the “abolitionists” have formed a potent political force (“It’s the most powerful coalition for human rights in America today -- perhaps in the world -- all under the radar screen of the press,” says one of its adherents) known for steamrolling opponents and stifling dissenting voices.
