"Off The Map" is the story of one unique family that abandoned almost everything the modern world holds as important.
As I learned later, "Off the Map" does indeed have it's origin's on the stage, and the screenplay is written by the playwright Joan Ackermann.
Like the family it depicts, "Off the Map" ignores many of the conceptual ideas of what constitutes a modern movie, but it is entertaining if you are willing to let it work some of its magic on you.

Off the Map is visually beautiful as a portrait of lives in the middle of emptiness, but it's not about the New Mexico scenery.
It takes a rugged survivalist mentality to sit through 108 minutes of Off the Map, a self-consciously loopy and mystical drama about a family that lives off the map, off the grid, off the land and mostly off their meds in the mangy desert of New Mexico.
The success of "Off the Map" falls upon de Angelis' ability to be neurotic without annoying us, and she plays her scenes beautifully opposite Joan Allen and Frozen Caveman, I mean, Sam Elliott.

Based on the play by Joan Ackermann (and adapted by Ackermann for the screen), Off the Map recalls one summer in the life of an offbeat family living off the land in rural New Mexico.
Off the Map exists in the mind of Bo Groden (Valentina de Angelis), a bold, inquisitive 12-year-old girl, the only child of Arlene (Allen), an earthy no-nonsense family stronghold, and Charley (Elliott), a secretive, silent man suffering from unbearable depression.
Off the Map's weaknesses, including a long conclusion and an unnecessary opening setup, are easily overlooked.

When he wakes, looking up into Arlene's watchful face, he discovers a deep love for this seeming angel, as well as a yen to paint her garden (this would be more or less literal, and he spends apparent years doing it, even becoming something of an artistic sensation in his obsession).
Adapted by Joan Ackermann from her play, Off the Map is part paean to natural wonders and part chamber piece for actors who know how to work their nuances (including J. Simmons as George, Charley's endlessly naïve best friend).
