Virtual Prestatyn: Offa's Dyke National Trail
Offa's Dyke is one of the most varied of our National Trails, passing through valleys, woods and patchworks of fields, and crossing remote uplands, bare hill tops and wind-swept ridges.
Located alongside the Offa's Dyke Path at one point on the hillside are the remains of an old cottage called Pant-y-Fachwen.
During his reign, Offa introduced a penny coin on which he styled himself as King of the English, and this is celebrated in the Prestatyn logo.

Built by Offa, King of Mercia in 757 to 796 AD, the dyke formed the boundary between England and Wales, running 182 miles from Prestatyn in the north to Sedbury, near Chepstow in the south.
This dyke was constructed of an earth birm and water filled 'motte'.
Additionally, unruly English families were sent to the west of the dyke, likewise the unruly Welsh were sent to the east of the dyke, until the Act of Union was enacted.

Offa's Dyke - long distance walk in Wales
No records exist as to why King Offa built his dyke, but it is fairly self evident that it was constructed to protect his kingdom from raids by the Welsh.
His Dyke is an earth bank, with a ditch on the Welsh side, and an earth bank up to 20 feet high on the English side.
The Dyke is not quite continuous and it would seem that rivers, forests or mountains acted as a boundary instead in those parts.

Offa, his dyke and his legendary hospitality - Offas dyke
Offa was King of the Mercians, a warrior tribe from central England, from 757 - 796, and is best remembered for his Dyke, which he had built to act as a defence against the Welsh.
It was constructed at the end of the eighth century and consisted of a great defensive earthwork, with a ditch on the Welsh side, and it ran for 140 miles from the mouth of the River Dee in the north to that of the Wye in the south.
When Ethelbert started his journey to Offa's palace at Sutton Walls near Marden, it is said that the sun became dark and the earth shook, and before arriving at the palace, Ethelbert had a dream in which he saw his bridal bed was destroyed, while his mother watched, weeping tears of blood.

Between 784 and 786 Offa had a 176 mile dyke built between the mouth of the River Wye to the banks of the River Dee near Basingwerk.
Presumably the dyke was to mark the end of his territory and as a deterrent or defence against attack.
The dyke consisted of a ditch of about 6ft on the west side (the welsh side) and a rampart of over 25ft on the east.

The original Offa’s Dyke earthwork is Britain’s longest ancient monument, named after the powerful 8C Saxon King Offa, who decreed a defensive earthen barrier be built as a monument to his greatness and to discourage the hostile Welsh Celtic tribes in the west raiding his kingdom.

Through survey work and excavation we know much more and, as this book discusses, we can now trace most of the 64 miles of earthworks stretching from Rushock Hill in the south to Truddyn near the Dee estuary.
Based on years of experience studying Offa's Dyke, David Hill and Margaret Worthington present a mile-by-mile description and analysis of the dyke placed within the social and political context of Offa's reign of the kingdom of Mercia (AD757-796).
The planning, building and function of the dyke are considered, illustrated with medieval-style comic strip sketches, and Offa's dyke is placed alongside other types of earthworks.
