Cutaneous chytridiomycosis is an emerging fungal disease of amphibians responsible for a series of mass die-offs, population declines, and extinctions of amphibians on a global scale (1,2).
Our study adds to reports of chytridiomycosis in the international pet trade (19), amphibians for outdoor pond stocking in the United States (2,20), importation for zoo collections (5), trade in laboratory animals (21), and species known to have recently been introduced into new geographic regions (e.g., cane toads in Australia) (1).
With a continued rise in the international air transport volume (22), we predict a growing impact of trade and commerce on disease emergence within all populations, including wildlife.

In December 1997, I was employed by the Office International des Epizooties to, among other duties, ensure the financial follow-up of the OIE’s Regional Representations.
Although my career as an international civil servant may have come to a complete halt and my professional credentials have been seriously damaged due to my dismissal from the OIE, I consider this situation to be the result of the choices of individual managers of the Office and not of the organisation as such.
That the Director General of the Office summarily terminates the employment of a staff member who has done his job, especially in the domain of financial control, can only be considered a wrongful and worrying act, for the Office in particular and the international civil service in general.

The meeting, which the World Health Organization (WHO) is holding jointly with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) and the Dutch Health Council starting on Monday, seeks to identify the factors that allow diseases to jump from animals to humans (zoonoses).
International experts will consider what lessons can be learned from the numerous outbreaks of zoonoses, including the recent outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome and bird flu.
Transmission of diseases like SARS or bird flu from animals to humans depends on many factors, including complex interactions between human and animal hosts, the causative microbial agent, and the environment, but ecological changes caused by human activity represent by far the most important factor in the emergence of such a disease.

The Office International des Epizooties includes no bee diseases in its List A (for which the most stringent requirements are made) but does have 5 in List B: acariasis (Acarapis woodi infestation), American foul brood (Bacillus larvae), European foul brood (Melissococcus pluton), nosemosis (Nosema apis) and varroasis (Varroa jacobsoni).
This update to the Office International des Epizooties International Animal Health Code (6th edition, 1992) includes revisions of the principles of certification and a much more detailed discussion of import risk analysis, as well as new requirements for a number of animal diseases (but no bee diseases).
