Office - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An office is a room or other area in which people work, but may also denote a position within an organisation with specific duties attached to it (see officer, office-holder, official); the latter is in fact an earlier usage, office as place originally referring to the location of one's duty.
An office is an architectural and design phenomenon and a social phenomenon, whether it is a tiny office such as a bench in the corner of a "Mom and Pop shop" of extremely small size (see SOHO) through entire floors of buildings up to and including massive buildings dedicated entirely to one company.
Before the invention of the printing press and its distribution there was often a very thin line between a private office and a private library since books were read or written in the same space at the same desk or table, and general accounting and personal or private letters were also done there.

 Green Building
The OEA defines "a sustainable building" as one that is healthy and comfortable for its occupants and is economical to operate.
A green building also considers historic preservation and access to public infrastructure systems, as well as the entire life cycle of the building and its components.
During 2005, the OEA's Sustainable Building Program is focused on providing education and training programs for design and construction practitioners, cataloging green buildings in Minnesota, documenting the pollution prevention benefits and energy cost savings of these buildings, and providing direct technical assistance to government, business, non-profits, and individuals.

 WBDG: Office Building
An office building must have flexible and technologically-advanced working environments that are safe, healthy, comfortable, durable, aesthetically-pleasing, and accessible.
The high-performance office must easily and economically accommodate frequent renovation and alteration, sometimes referred to as "churn." These modifications may be due to management reorganization, personnel shifts, changes in business models, or the advent of technological innovation, but the office infrastructure, interior systems, and furnishings must be up to the challenge.
Office buildings are often impacted by urban planning and municipal zoning, which attempt to promote compatible land use and vibrant neighborhoods.

In a commercial building, security risks come from both outsiders and building and tenant employees, and may include murder, robbery, rape, assault, theft, fraud, commercial espionage, arson, vandalism, bomb threats, workplace violence and (displaced) domestic violence, plus sabotage, to name but a few.
The building threat assessment should include a review of any known past crimes in the building (if it’s built and operating), along with an evaluation of the type and rates of crime in nearby office buildings, and in the immediate area.
Malicious vandalism, and major damage by disgruntled building or tenant employees might be directed against the building itself, rather than directly against the tenants or their property.

While no site for the office building has been selected yet, LiVigne said, the university's "preferred site" is the current location of the Tompkins County Trust Co. main office, in the "bank alley" section of the Ithaca Commons, near the intersection of Tioga and Seneca streets.
It is up to the three developers who are still "in the running" to choose a building site, LiVigne said, but one consideration in the university's final choice of a developer will be an appropriate site, as well as an architectural design "that is in character with downtown," he said.
Regarding architectural design, LiVigne repeatedly promised "no glass office towers" and that the design would be "in character with downtown Ithaca." If the bank site is chosen, he said, architects may recommend retaining the building's decorative façade and fitting the new structure within at least part of the façade.

Sullivan's Tall Office Building Artistically Considered
Only in rare instances does the plan or floor arrangement of the tall office building take on an aesthetic value, and this usually when the lighting court is external or becomes an internal feature of great importance.
The practical horizontal and vertical division or office unit is naturally based on a room of comfortable area and height, and the size of this standard office room as naturally predetermines the standard structural unit, and, approximately, the size of window-openings.
And thus the design of the tall office building takes its place with all other architectural types made when architecture, as has happened once in many years, was a living art.
