Rem Koolhaas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rem Koolhaas (born November 17, 1944 in Rotterdam, Netherlands) is a Dutch architect, former journalist and screenwriter who studied architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.
He is the principal of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, or OMA, and of its research-oriented counterpart AMO.
With his Prada projects, Koolhaas has ventured into the realms of infusing architecture with the fleeting world of fashion and with celebrity-studded cachet: not unlike Garnier's Opera, the central space of Kolhaas' Beverly Hills Prada store is occupied by a massive central staircase, ostenibly displaying select wares, but mainly the shoppers themselves.

 Introduction to Design Theories
The new "ecstasy about architecture" - comprising almost equal parts of constraint and elation, resignation and intoxication - is the essence of the ambivalent life in the metropolis, where the antinomies of modern utopianism are played out.
Such an architecture not only creates the "sets" of everyday life, but it also defines its contents with all possible means and disciplines such as literature, psychology, etc. Through the magical arrangement of human activities on all possible levels, it writes a scenario for the scriptless Metropolitan extras.
Metropolitan architecture is megalomaniac on a modest scale.

OMA's design for the Seattle Public Library--one of the firm's most heavily anticipated projects to date--begins with a radical rethinking of the very nature of the library.
If the library exists today as a threatened sanctuary, it has been done in by its own stubborn reliance on one kind of literacy and its consequent blindness to other emerging forms that increasingly dominate our culture, especially the huge efficiencies and pleasures of visual intelligence.
Rather than merely package this traditional institution in a new way, OMA has completely reinvented it, transforming it wholeheartedly into a site able to aggressively orchestrate the coexistence of all available technologies for collecting, condensing, distributing, reading, and manipulating information.

Content's mania for full dis- closure (the humility beneath the bravado) means that sometimes all the thinking is done for you, and the speedy approach persistently turns slapdash: Many of the graphics don't do justice to fascinating demographic data.
The building, to be completed in 2008, is bigger and more ambitious than anything OMA could do in the West: A loop instead of a skyscraper, it implies flow and interconnectedness rather than hierarchy.
The project also pushes OMA into the ethically uncomfortable territory where it is always happiest: a commission from a state-run media organ in a country that has severely curtailed free speech and plenty of labor camps.
