Cathedral - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In some cases the office of provost was abolished, but in others it was continued: the provost, who was occasionally archdeacon as well, remaining head of the chapter.
Bishop Gisa introduced a provost as head of the chapter of Wells, but the office was afterwards subordinated to the other dignities, and the provost became simply the steward of certain of the prebendal lands.
In England the dean was the head of all the secular cathedral churches, and was originally elected by the chapter and confirmed in office by the bishop.

One of the most vital roles played by the Secretary-General is the use of his "good offices" -- steps taken publicly and in private, drawing upon his independence, impartiality and integrity, to prevent international disputes from arising, escalating or spreading.
Shortly after taking office, the Secretary-General presented a sweeping reform package aimed at helping the United Nations to change with the times and adapt to a new era of global affairs.
A new post of Deputy Secretary-General was created to assist the Secretary-General in the array of responsibilities assigned to his office; the first holder of this position is Louise FrÈchette, who was Canada's Deputy Minister of National Defence before her appointment in 1998.

The Medical Examiner"s Office for the City and County of San Francisco generally calls for an inquest when there is equivalent information regarding the circumstances of a death and a decision must be made between two or more possible manners of death.
In accordance with the laws of California, these inquests were held by the Chief Medical Examiner for the purpose of determining the cause, circumstances and manner of death.
While neither the District Attorney"s Office nor the Police Department were particularly concerned about being notified of pending inquests, providing such notification would alert both departments of possible concerns regarding Medical Examiner"s cases and allow them to make decisions on whether or not their presence at the proceeding is advised.

 ASIS Bulletin - Dec/Jan 1998: U.S. Copyright Office
A number of post-Feist cases have held that substantial takings from copyrightable compilations did not constitute infringement, either because the defendant’s compilation differed in more than a trivial degree from the plaintiff’s, or because any elements of selection, coordination or arrangement that were copied were found not to constitute creative authorship.
The 1991 Feist decision gave the Copyright Office clear authority to reject works for which protection was claimed solely on the basis of "sweat of the brow." The Office revisited its examining practices for compilations and issued new guidelines in 1991.
From March through June 1997, the Office held 16 meetings with groups or individuals with an interest in the subject of database protection, including representatives of the library community, science agencies and organizations, educational groups and database producers.

THE QUESTION whether a person holds an office of profit has to be interpreted based on the facts and circumstances of each case and the relevant statutory provisions.
In Ashok Kumar Bhattacharya vs Ajoy Biswas (AIR 1985 SC 211) the Supreme Court held that to determine whether a person holds an office under the Government, each case must be measured and judged in the light of the relevant provisions and sections.
On account of holding of such office, would the Government be in a position to so influence him or her as to interfere with independence in functioning or would the holding of the two offices — one under the Government and the other of MP — involve a conflict of interests inter se?

Men Behind the Masque - Monopolisation of Office
urning first to the executive office, analysis of the executive personnel of Colchester, Ipswich, and Lynn,[3] indicates that the average number of times mayoral office was held in Lynn was about twice, ballival office in Ipswich a little more than three times, ballival office in Colchester three times.
About 45% of the 301 persons subject to this analysis held executive office only once, and they are balanced by a much smaller group whose members held office six, ten, a dozen or more times.
It is therefore interesting that approximately the same number of persons held the executive office in each of these three towns - perhaps hinting that, in these towns of similar population size, there were a limited number of suitable candidates for mayoralty or ballivalty.[4] Maldon presents a slightly better case for monopolisation.
