Official Religion and Popular Religion in Pre-Exilic Ancient Israel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Kaufmann’s sporadic references to “popular religion” lead one to infer that what he had in mind was the religion of the demographic majority, the religion of the masses (1972:122, 123, 132, 146, 223).
As for “official religion,” Kaufmann was only a bit more forthcoming.
These, as we are about to see, render his understanding of both popular and official religion, and a host of other things, very problematic.

State religion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Increasingly, sociologists of religion are using the concept of monopolies in economics as an analogy for state churches.
State religions tend to enjoy the allegiance of the majority of their country; however much of this support is little more than nominal, with many members of the church rarely attending it.
Some countries with official religions have laws that guarantee the freedom of worship, full liberty of conscience, and places of worship for all citizens and implement those laws in society better than countries that do not have an official or established state religion.

Establishment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Establishment of religion refers to the act of positioning a church or religion as the official, or an official, state-supported church.
With regard to religion, establishment is the act of assigning a religion the status of an official, state-supported church.
The first amendment to the United States Constitution forbids Congress from making any law with respect to an "establishment of religion." Here the term "establishment" refers to an official religion similar to the Church of England, with which the Constitution's authors were quite familiar.

Religion contributes to a strong family unit, the building block of society; it fosters an economic safety net by encouraging charity, and provides a source of strength for those recovering from addiction to alcohol, drugs, gambling, and other social diseases.
Accommodating religion is not the same thing as establishing an official religion.
Government can allow religion's positive effects to be maximized by ceasing to interfere with its free expression, and joining hands with religious people in appropriate ways to help tackle some of society's worst problems.

Even if there were official status to be gained, none of these governments would be swayed by a number of yahoos writing "Jedi" into a blank space on their census forms.
Officials said on Thursday there was "absolutely no possibility" of Jedi appearing as a choice of religion on future census forms after officials created a code for Jedi to help them analyze responses to the 2001 population survey.
This no more means that Jedi is an "official" religion than the election bureau's assigning a numeric code to "Mickey Mouse" (who usually receives at least several hundred write-in votes in every major election) means that a cartoon rodent is a qualified candidate for political office.

In so far as the Romans had a religion of their own, it was not based on any central belief, but on a mixture of fragmented rituals, taboos, superstitions, and traditions which they collected over the years from a number of sources.
To the Romans, religion was less a spiritual experience than a contractual relationship between mankind and the forces which were believed to control people's existence and well-being.
Christianity is often portrayed as the religion of the poor and the slaves.

A quite different topic is treated in statist religion, and yet another topic in civil religion.
The degree of state endorsement of a state religion varies, from mere endorsement and financial support, with freedom for other faiths to practice, to prohibiting any competing church from operating and persecuting the followers of other churches.
In some communist countries, notably the People's Republic of China, the state sponsors religious organizations, and activities outside the state-sponsored religious organizations are met with various degrees of official disapproval.

The declaration of Islam as the official Palestinian religion is a key element, but stipulates that the state would guarantee the sanctity of places of worship and respect other religions, according to the draft.
But a constitution is in some ways contingent on a cease-fire and a PA official in Ramallah is already expecting a conference of Palestinian organizations scheduled for Wednesday in Cairo will fail because Palestinian factions are no longer able to control all the gunmen.

In 1881, Catholicism ceased to be the official religion of France and in 1988 religious education was completely removed from the education system.

As The Catholic Encyclopedia maintains, the war against religion, from the French Revolution to the twentieth century, was carried out by "the anti-clerical measures passed in the French Parliament" which "were decreed beforehand in the Masonic lodges and executed under the direction of the Grand Orient." 4 This fact is clear from Masonic writings.

The teachings of THE TRUE RELIGION are fairly straightforward; they are based on the fact that many deities have publicly established their existence.
