		I was quite wrong to ignore Officium, the Hilliard Ensemble's inspirational collabaration with saxophonist Jan Garbareck.
		The Hilliard's CD of works by Perotin (one of the earliest known composers, with dates of around 1180-1210 this is Early Music with a capital E!) awaits at the world's best independent classical music store, Prelude Records in Norwich.
		And Christobal de Morales (the composer of the Hilliard's title track on Officium), Manuel Cardoso,, and John Dunstable, and others beckon, while I have been getting enormous rewards from Brilliant Classics wonderful O Magnus Mysterium 4cd box set...

		Officium Triste manage to create a very correct album that is far away from being a cheap impersonation of the British doomsters, nor any other classic band.
		As I say, the harmonies and sound of guitars are clean and melodic, riding between heavy rhythm chords and tasteful notes that weave convincing landscapes.
		However, don´t be mistaken: the main tempo is slow, as doom metal is meant to be.

		One Christmas in high school, I got this CD from my mom called Officium (put together by Hilliard Ensemble and Jan Garbarek) - we put it in the CD player, and my dad and I were like..."Grreat.
		Since then I've become a huge Hilliard Ensemble fan, and have another of their albums, Lassus.
		In both Jonny's book Alternative Worship and Steve Case's book "The Book of Uncommon Prayer", they mention this odd CD, "Officium" as recommended music for alt.worship and more meditative events.

		Someone has to counteract the blanket praise for this awful project.
		Never a gifted musician (he damn near wrecked Gary Peacock's otherwise fine 'Guamba', for example), Jan Garbarek persistently interrupts the Hilliard Ensemble's wonderful performances on 'Officium' with a sound roughly akin to someone rubbing a balloon into a microphone, leaving you to skip through the CD for the two tracks on which he doesn't appear.
		What Garbarek does to these devotional pieces is bordering on desecration, while perpetuating the misconception that ECM simply churns out New Age rubbish.
