Vorbis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Ogg Vorbis is supported by several large digital audio player manufacturers such as Rio, Neuros and iRiver.
Tremor, a version of the Vorbis decoder which uses fixed-point arithmetic (rather than floating point) was made available to the public on September 2, 2002 (also under a BSD-style license).
Tremor, or platform specific versions based on it, is more suited to implementation on the limited facilities available in commercial audio systems (such as portable players).

Encyclopedia: Vorbis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
It is often mistakenly called just Ogg (in turn mistakenly written in uppercase, "OGG") due to either the file container Ogg, the file extension.ogg or possibly even the MIME content type application/ogg used for Vorbis playback in streaming.
Ogg is a patent-free, fully open multimedia bitstream container format designed for efficient streaming and file compression (storage).
Another indication of Ogg Vorbis' increasing popularity is the number of music websites using it, like Jamendo or Mindawn, as well as several national radio stations—such as Radio France, CBC Radio and Virgin Radio —providing additional Vorbis streams.

Ogg Vorbis is a completely free and open audio compression (codec) project from the Xiph.org Foundation, and is part of their Ogg effort to create free and open multimedia and signal processing standards.
Like everything in the Ogg project, Vorbis is believed to be completely free of the licensing or patent issues raised by other proprietary formats such as MP3.
A fixed-point implementation of the Ogg Vorbis decoder, called Ogg Tremor, also under a BSD-style license, was released on September 2, 2002, in hopes that manufacturers of hardware audio players would support the format in upcoming versions and models of their devices.

Ogg Vorbis tunes in to hardware | CNET News.com
Ogg Vorbis is an open-source project maintained by volunteer developers around the world.
This is because Ogg Vorbis players have only been designed to work with processors capable of performing floating-point calculations; the chips commonly found in PCs can handle these, but the embedded processors found typically in portable music players cannot.
The organization emphasized that adding Ogg Vorbis support would cost hardware makers nothing in license fees, and the group is offering to provide them with any engineering help they may need to integrate the format.

Linux on iPod :: View topic - Ogg Vorbis Hack
Yes OGG playback performance is fairly sad, but then using the freely available mp3 decoders performance is also not perfect.
My experience shows, though, that ogg vorbis still wins for higher bandwidth, but only for those songs, which really need high quality (there's no use in hearing those high-frequencies in standard-pop, for they have mostly been filtert out long before the tracks were put on CD).
As bone tingling fabulous as ogg may sound to you, it is unfortuneatly not that great for embedded devices lacking fpu's...

It appears to be based on the main tremor branch, and not the low memory branch.
I have implemented Tremor Ogg on BF533-EZKIT, it works pretty well, changes in source files were minimal...Now I am replaying only simple 1MB file in flash memory, so I am implementing SD card with FAT file system now.
Thanks for the Tremor modification tips - I'll be sure to look over those functions specifically for my project (only I'm pulling the Ogg file from a CF card attached to the J1 & J2 ports on the bottom of the BF533 EZ-Lite kit).

Will it ever happen? iPod + Ogg Vorbis support - Topic Ars OpenForum
Since Apple is on a big standards kick, and ogg isn't an offical and widely accepted standard, and since there isn't native ogg support in MPEG4, I'd say that the chances of iPod+Ogg are slim.
The ASIC from PortalPlayer could be updated to decode ogg vorbis files but it might not have enough power to do the decoding.
After checking the Tremor mailing list it seems like many of the small processors lack the oomph to handle decoding and this very well might be the case with the iPod.

Tremor uses fixed-point because many audio decoding hardware devices do not have an FPU (to save money) and audio decoding requires enough performance that a software implementation of floating-point on low-speed devices would not work well.

An embedded version of the open source audio compression format with the odd name of Ogg Vorbis has been released.
The release, aggressively called Tremor, re-implements the Vorbis format, stripping out Vobis' dependence on floating point - or decimal - math and making it suitable for for embedding in small handheld devices.
Tremor was created with an eye to boosting the acceptance of Vorbis since handheld devices are usually built around low-cost processors that can't do decimal computation.
