Ogliastra was first part of the "giudicato"(principality) of Cagliari, and later belonged to Gallura.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Ogliastra became a province, its capital in Lanusei.
Ogliastra is also a diocese - it was first part of the Suelli diocese, which was founded in the XI century, then passed under Cagliari.

The Province of Ogliastra has a surface area of 1,854 square km, with a total population of a little over 55,000 inhabitants, the largest centers being Tortoli', Lanusei, Barisardo, Baunei, being the elast populated Province in Italy.
The province was recently (May 2005) re-established, though it was one of the 15 Prefetture established in Sardinia, with capital Tortolì, though in 1821 the capital was moved to Lanusei.
With the unity of Italy in 1859 the region was divided in only two provinces (Cagliari and Sassari) and Ogliastra was included in the province of Cagliari, to be included again in 1927 into the newly established province of Nuoro.

As with many territories in Ogliastra, the only monuments to be seen in Talana are the churches, in particular the parochial church of Santa Marta; the foundations date back to the beginning of the 800’s, although the entire church wasn’t finished for over a hundred years.
It is full of well-preserved statues, among them the statue of Santa Barbara from the 16th century, one of San Michele with a demon at his feet, and one of Sant’ Efisio dating from the 18th century.
The festival is organised by a family together with the priest; the statue of the saint is taken through the village at the head of a procession and carried to the church where the festivities begin and last for two days.

There are 3 possibilities from the airports of Olbia, Cagliari and Alghero (from all three it takes about 2½ hours to drive to Ogliastra):-
For cyclists (with their bikes) we can meet people at the airport with a van and bring them to Ogliastra.
Rides start at the front door and beaches are within walking distance, so it’s not absolutely necessary to have the use of a car, although you may want to hire a car for the flexibility it gives (see below).  It will cost €55 one-way, min 4 people/transfer.
