Oh, Inverted World, the sun-baked debut album from Albuquerque indie quartet The Shins, signposts a fascinating change of direction for Sub Pop Records.
Every track is melodic and unique and, although apparently unexciting on first listen, "Oh, Inverted World" is hypnotic and soon begins to invade the listeners consciousness.
The indie kids shouldn't be expecting to bounce around their Kinesis and Hundred Reasons CD-strewn bedrooms to "Oh, Inverted World", but those appreciating a simple melody, and the vocals of a guy, James Mercer, who you are left convinced wouldn't say boo to a goose, would truly adore this masterpiece.

The Shins: Oh, Inverted World - PopMatters Music Review
Let's imagine, for argument's sake, that the entire world of guitar rock is the letters A through Z. Indie rock, just a fraction of this spectrum, could be represented by the letters A to D (and that's being generous).
Oh, Inverted World is filled with musical allusions that will probably go over the heads of many backpack-and-thick-rimmed-glasses wearing listeners: lots of Brian Wilson-like vocal lines, McGuinn-esque jangley guitar, some Barrett-oid psych here and there.
In keeping with the Chills comparison, the first single from Oh, Inverted World, "New Slang", is definitely the Shins' "Pink Frost": a moody, ethereal number that nevertheless will linger in the listener's head long after it has ceased playing.

On "Oh, Inverted World", their semi-debut record (they've been around in one form or another for years), the Shins manage to sound like no one else by sounding a lot like a Chapel Hill bar band circa 1987 with a serious jones for the kind of oddball pop pioneered by the likes of Brian Wilson.
This is one of the strongest debut records to come along this year (well, until the Strokes, anyway), and we can only hope that its sequel will live up to the expectations established by "Oh, Inverted World".

I prefer Oh, inverted World over Chutes to narrow, that being said, though, Chutes does contain what I would have to say is my favorite Shins song(Saint Simon).
It is indeed and album that pulls you into a world of sound an images, but you'll need to bring your imagination and (at times) patience along for the ride.
In doing so, "Oh Inverted World" falls just short of one of the best releases of the summer and we lose out on enjoying the best song they've cut in their brief career.

Oh, Inverted World, the sun-baked debut album from Albuquerque indie quartet The Shins, signposts a fascinating change of direction for Sub Pop Records.
It's not all simple sunshine pop, either: the delicate, melancholy spaghetti western strum of "New Slang" recalls the barren desertscapes of Ennio Morricone, while the shadowy, monastic vocals and trilling cellos of "Your Algebra" provide a chilling two minutes of commendably dark psychedelia.
Sure, it might have one foot in the past but Oh, Inverted World sounds like a fresh start for Sub Pop--one that drowns out the muddy roar of grunge with the hum of good vibrations.

For some have hailed Oh, Inverted World as the next great entry in a long line of clean and carefree pop albums that strings back to the Beach Boys' early surfing days.
The sound is like Weezer at their best-- simple, addictive chord changes and clear, sing-song vocals-- but for some background rattling and a few slow, strummy passages.
Oh, Inverted World comes close, but too much of the material here recalls other bands to consider it a "great" album.

Fast 'n' Bulbous Reviews: The Shins * Oh, Inverted World (Sub Pop, 2001)
Like a handful of bands before them, The Shins are a band that starts out paying tribute to the past, but have the songwriting chops to potentially transcend it.
On Oh, Inverted World they've started out of the box a stride ahead of the pack by nicely balancing 60s with 90s influences -- psychedelic pop, Love, Moby Grape, Kinks with Guided By Voices, Sunny Day Real Estate and the Elephant 6 stable; British glam and Robyn Hitchcock.
The one thing that holds back Jason Mercer's songwriting is the same problem that The New Pornographers suffer from -- dinky sound.

The Shins, who have gotten a lot of buzz these days, are in danger of falling into the trap of overhype and too-high expectations, but they definitely deserve better.
Their debut album Oh, Inverted World, which evokes the feeling of the classic 60’s summer pop of the Beach Boys and Donovan, is like a tall glass of iced tea on a hot summer day; not instantly catchy, but meant to be savored and deserving of time to grow on you, which, assuredly, it will.
This album is all about flow, and is by far one of the most cohesive works of pop music I’ve heard in a long time; there isn’t a single jarring moment or abrupt change in tone to break the spell.
