Even back then Ohakune had real advantages – railway for fast delivery, a late growing season, inexpensive land and a cold winter climate to discourage pests.

Ohakune is the self-professed apres-ski capital of the North Island and if you're into snow sports and toying with the idea of buying a second home, this little mountain town is certainly worth a look.
Once there, the town is around 25 minutes drive from the Turoa ski fields and 45 minutes drive from the Whakapapa ski fields on the mountain's southern and northern slopes respectively.
Section prices are still relatively cheap in Ohakune - around $60k to $70k for a 400msq section - and although building on them isn't, you can relocate a new, pre-built, three bed home from Tauranga for around $120k which would sell immediately for $190k to $200k.
