Originally, the attorney general was appointed by the legislature.
With the adoption of Ohio's second constitution in 1851, the attorney general became an elected office.

Senate Bill 28 authorizes the Attorney General's office, as a result of complaints or its own inquiries, to investigate a telemarketer who may be in violation of the federal Do-Not-Call regulations.
The bill authorizes the Attorney General to suspend an investigation if the telemarketer agrees to cease and desist from the suspected violation if a written assurance of voluntary compliance is provided by the suspected violator of the federal regulations.
The Attorney General may bring a civil action against the alleged violator in either an Ohio common pleas court or federal district court.

Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro is urging a judge to seize the liquidated assets of a man accused of swindling millions of dollars from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC).
In a lawsuit filed May 24, Petro is accusing Noe of defrauding Ohio BWC and its two rare-coin investment funds Noe managed for the agency.
This spring, Noe's lawyer admitted that as much as $13 million was missing from the two rare-coin funds, and Petro asserts that Noe converted at least $4 million in Ohio BWC funds to his and his wife's personal use.

In May 2005, the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma filed this suit claiming that it retained hunting and fishing rights throughout most of central and southern Ohio and that it still held aboriginal title over several of its former reservations that were ceded to the United States government in the early 1800s.
A day later, the Tribe filed a motion asking the court to dismiss almost all of the other defendants in the case and asking the court to approve "settlement agreements" the tribe had entered into with a few private defendants and several other parties who were never even part of this litigation.
