By 1978, the Ohio Players were so mismanaged that they were reduced to playing Hollywood's tiny Roxy Theater on Sunset Blvd. The band produced their last record for Mercury and their final comprised of the post-Westbound configuration, Jass-Ay-Lay-Dee.

Ohio State's athletic department was handed three years of probation in March of 2006 stemming from seven violations which took place in the men's basketball program and one each in football and women's basketball — many of which involved extra benefits for athletes, particularly money given to two men's basketball players from Eastern Europe.
Ohio State officials, with oversight from the NCAA, had been looking into whether the fundraiser violated NCAA bylaws regarding extra benefits for athletes and their families.
Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said major problems were avoided because the players recognized that the fundraiser might be an extra benefit as defined by the NCAA.

It always seems strange to me how little coverage there is of The Ohio Players in blogland so consider this my first step in changing that for the better.
What originally caught my eye with these funk fiends was their brilliantly over the top album covers for their westbound recordings, a mixture of overt sexuality and bizarre s&m featuring a rather scary bald woman.
Formed at the very end of the 50's as the Ohio Untouchables before reforming as the Ohio Players in 1968, the group really hit form at the start of the seventies releasing at least one album a year throughout the decade and maintaining an amazingly high standard throughout.
