Inmates placed at OSP are classified as "high maximum security", and are considered to present the "highest degree of threat to the security and order of the department and its institutions, in the professional judgment of the classifying official".
Many inmate’s at OSP have complained to CIIC staff that they "don’t know why" they have been assigned to supermax and many have complained that they "don’t need to be at OSP", especially when their reported conduct is compared to other inmates who remain at lesser security institutions.
OSP inmates have complained that they are not told what they must do to earn their way out of supermax status.

This photo of Nichols was provided by the Ohio Historical Society and its collection of portraits of prisoners from the Ohio State Penitentiary.
Because Nichols was of mixed-blood (known as a "mulatto" in that era), the murder was sensationalized with racial overtimes by the newspapers of the day.
He was convicted of murder, and on Dec. 9, 1904, was put to death in the electric chair at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus.

If prisons can be very haunted places because of the death and tragedy that can take place in them, then the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus must be one of the most haunted.
Apparently, the state of Ohio had tried to get the voters to take a tax increase to build a new multiplex arena on the site of the prison but the voters turned it down.
now it is a parking lot of the Columbus BlueJackets (Home of the newest NHL hockey that is first established for Ohio that is under construction and is due to open in fall 2000) which the Stadium is also built on far north of the front building that the Prison was built on.
