Ohio, a Republican-leaning swing state in presidential elections, is currently dominated at the state level by Republicans.
The outcome of the gubernatorial election is being closely watched on a national level as it may be a bellwether for the 2008 presidential election.
Blackwell received national attention for his role in the 2004 presidential election; as Ohio's secretary of state, he was in charge of Ohio's election machinery and made several controversial decisions in the run-up and follow-on to the election.

On January 15, 2006, a group of 31 clergy from Ohio wrote a letter to IRS Commissioner Everson to complain about political intervention by several 501(c)(3) organizations (charitable or religious organizations) in Ohio.
The clergy allege that the Ohio organizations are distributing voter guides from the Christian Coalition 4 and other organizations that are limited to specific issues of interest to those organizations.

The State of Ohio is among the states having its primary election today, which includes a closely-watched Republican gubernatorial contest between Secretary of State Ken Blackwell and Attorney General Jim Petro.
Ohio took advantage of these incentives, and therefore has to either get rid of its punch cards – used by about 70% of voters in 2004 – or pay back the millions of dollars in federal funds it's already received.
There's also a new requirement of state law in Ohio that takes effect this year, requiring a "voter verified paper audit trail." While HAVA requires a paper trail that can be used in the event of a manual audit, the Ohio legislature passed a law that goes further, requiring a particular type of paper trail.

Primary turnout for contested elections in both parties can be a simple but not surefire predictor of partisan turnout in a general election.
I read on one of the Ohio blogs, I think it was, that they ran incessant negative ads - not against Wilson, but against one of his less well-known opponents in the primary.
