	Immune System In Hamsters Bolstered During Winter, Especially In Times Of Stress, Study Finds
		Researchers at Ohio State University and their colleagues found that the hamsters had higher levels of certain immune cells in their bloodstream during the short days of winter.
		Hamsters take a cue from the decreasing length of days as winter approaches as a signal to boost their immune function, according to the study, which will be published in the March 19 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
		Other co-authors of the study were Kavitha Viswanathan and Alison Saul, both in the Department of Oral Biology at Ohio State; and Steven Yellon, from the department of physiology and pharmacology at Loma Linda University.

	Ohio School Choice
		In May 1997, the Ohio Court of Appeals struck down the Cleveland pilot scholarship program by a vote of 3 to 0, ruling that the program violated the religious establishment clauses of the Ohio and U. Constitutions, as well as a provision in the state constitution requiring general laws to have statewide application.
		While 61 percent of the public school students in the Cleveland area attended schools that had almost entirely white or minority enrollment, only 50 percent of voucher recipients were educated in such a homogenous environment.
		The group, now represented by the Coalition for Public Education, challenged the state’s charter law by saying that charter schools are not part of Ohio’s “system of common schools” and that local school boards should govern the schools.
